Working with a document in the Microsoft Word word processor is like scrolling through a film - every user action, whether it's inserting an image, typing a character, or deleting it, is like a frame in a movie. In Microsoft Word, there are two options for working with the user's undo and redo functions:

Almost every user has encountered a situation where certain actions performed on the computer, instead of the expected result, are harmful, and I want to understand how to cancel last action on the computer. Microsoft realized a long time ago that the main enemy of the computer and operating system is far from some hacker or some other attacker, but the user himself, because it is by their actions that people most often cause their devices to malfunction. That is why the function of how to undo the last action on the computer was introduced, and it is called "Restoring the operating system".

What is it?

Restoring the operating system is a feature that allows you to roll back your computer to a specific date when its characteristics and data were saved. It should be noted that this data can be saved both automatically and manually by the user, depending on how exactly this function was configured.

The advantage of this method is that it allows you to completely remove all the negative actions that you performed on your computer for a certain time. But, when considering how to undo the last action on the computer, it often fails to be used, because it undoes several actions performed on the computer at the same time, regardless of whether they were harmful.

Automatic and manual

As mentioned above, the system can be saved both manually by the user and automatically. In professional circles, this is called "saving a backup", and it is necessary to do it, since it is impossible to undo the last action on the computer without it.

To configure this in Windows 7, you need to go along the path: “Control Panel”> “Recovery”> “File Recovery”> “Configure backup". Here you will need to select the main parameters and start archiving. What to choose?

That is why it is recommended to carry out archiving exclusively manually. Cancel actions

You can undo almost all commands done in Excel with the command Cancel located on the Quick Access Toolbar. The Quick Access Toolbar is typically displayed to the left of the Excel title bar. You can also click ctrl+z to cancel actions.

Select Cancel, after executing some command by mistake, and this command will be canceled as if you never executed it at all. You can undo the result of the last 100 commands executed by pressing the button Cancel many times.

However, some actions cannot be undone. All commands executed with the button File, such as saving a workbook, cannot be undone. If you click on the arrow button to the right of the button Cancel, you will see a list of recent commands that can be undone (Fig. 6.1). You can select a set of such commands at once to undo several actions with one click. The figure highlights seven actions.

Keep in mind that you cannot undo the effect of running a macro. In fact, running a macro that changes a sheet erases all undo information. This tangible disadvantage of Excel is not in Microsoft Word.

Action return

The Redo button (located to the right of the Undo button on the Quick Access Toolbar) essentially cancels the Undo command. If you have undone too many actions, you can click the Redo button (or click ctrl+y or F4) to return commands that have been undone.

Action repeat

You can repeat many operations by pressing ctrl+y or F4. This command simply repeats the last action. However, if the last operation was an Undo operation, then the result of its action is undone (as described in the previous section).

Repetition of commands can be useful in terms of saving time. I'll give you an example. You could apply many formatting settings (set font size, bold, background color, and frame color) to a cell using the Format Cells dialog box. After closing the dialog box, you can easily set similar formatting settings for other cells or ranges by pressing Ctrl+Y. Or we may need to insert blank lines at certain places on the sheet. To do this, run the command Home → Cells → Insert → Insert rows per sheet once, then position the cursor in the cell where you want to insert the next line, and press ctrl+y to repeat the insert row command.

Excel also has a button Repeat, but it's usually not available. Regardless, let's add it to the Quick Access Toolbar.

  1. Click right click mouse on the Quick Access Toolbar and in the appeared context menu select Customizing the Quick Access Toolbar. As a result, a dialog box will open. Excel Options tab Quick Access Toolbar.
  2. Drop Select teams from select item Frequently used commands.
  3. From the list of commands select Repeat.
  4. Click the button Add to add the selected command to the Quick Access Toolbar.
  5. Click OK to close the dialog Excel Options.

You may ask why add a button at all Repeat to the Quick Access Toolbar if you can use a keyboard shortcut ctrl+y. First, when you move the mouse pointer over this button, Excel will display a description of the repeated operation (Fig. 6.2). Second, the button Repeat becomes inactive if you cannot repeat the last command. - a kind of visual signal that will help to avoid unnecessary attempts to repeat what simply cannot be repeated.

Unfortunately, the retry function is not always reliable. In some cases, you may find that pressing ctrl+y does not give any effect (although it should). In other situations, pressing ctrl+y can repeat the command you ran before the previous command.
