Oblivion association crashes. Known issues and solutions. The Elder Scrolls Oblivion black screen

Unfortunately, there are flaws in games: brakes, low FPS, crashes, freezes, bugs and other minor and not very errors. Often problems begin before the game even starts, when it won't install, won't load, or won't even download. Yes, and the computer itself is sometimes weird, and then in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, instead of a picture, a black screen, control does not work, no sound is heard, or anything else.

What to do first

  1. Download and run the world famous CCleaner(download from a direct link) is a program that will clean your computer of unnecessary garbage, as a result of which the system will work faster after the first reboot;
  2. Update all drivers in the system using the program Driver Updater (download via direct link) - it will scan your computer and update all drivers to current version in 5 minutes;
  3. Install the program WinOptimizer(download from a direct link) and turn on the game mode in it, which will end useless background processes during game launch and increase performance in the game.

The second thing to do if you encounter any problems with The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is to check the system requirements. In a good way, you need to do this even before the purchase, so as not to regret the money spent.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion minimum system requirements:

Windows XP, Pentium 4, 512 Mb RAM, 4.7 Gb HDD, 128 Mb

Every gamer should at least have a little understanding of the components, know why a video card, processor and other things are needed in system unit.

Files, drivers and libraries

Almost every device in a computer requires a set of special software. These are drivers, libraries and other files that ensure the correct operation of the computer.

It's worth starting with the drivers for the video card. Modern graphics cards are produced by only two large companies - Nvidia and AMD. Having found out which product spins the coolers in the system unit, we go to the official website and download the package of fresh drivers:

A prerequisite for the successful functioning of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is the availability of the latest drivers for all devices in the system. Download the utility Driver Updater to easily and quickly download the latest drivers and install them with one click:

If The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion does not start, we recommend that you try disabling your antivirus or put the game in the antivirus exceptions, and also check the system requirements again and if something from your build does not match, then improve your PC if possible, purchasing more powerful components.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion has a black screen, white screen, color screen. Decision

Problems with screens of different colors can be roughly divided into 2 categories.

Firstly, they are often associated with the use of two video cards at once. For example, if your motherboard has a built-in video card, but you play on a discrete one, then The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion can be launched for the first time on a built-in one, while you will not see the game itself, because the monitor is connected to a discrete video card.

Secondly, color screens happen when there are problems with displaying the image on the screen. This can happen for various reasons. For example, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion cannot work with an outdated driver or does not support a video card. Also, a black / white screen may be displayed when working at resolutions that are not supported by the game.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion crashes. At a certain or random moment. Decision

You play for yourself, play and here - bam! - everything goes out, and now you have a desktop without any hint of the game. Why it happens? To solve the problem, it is worth trying to figure out what the nature of the problem is.

If the crash occurs at a random point in time without any pattern, then with a probability of 99% we can say that this is a mistake of the game itself. In this case, fixing something is very difficult, and the best thing is to just put The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion aside and wait for the patch.

However, if you know exactly at what moments the crash occurs, then you can continue the game, avoiding situations that provoke a crash.

However, if you know exactly at what moments the crash occurs, then you can continue the game, avoiding situations that provoke a crash. Alternatively, you can download The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion save and bypass the departure point.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion freezes. The picture freezes. Decision

The situation is about the same as with crashes: many freezes are directly related to the game itself, or rather, to the developer's mistake when creating it. However, a frozen picture can often become a starting point for investigating the deplorable state of a video card or processor.

So if the picture in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion freezes, then use the programs to display statistics on the loading of components. Perhaps your video card has long exhausted its working life or the processor is heating up to dangerous temperatures?

The easiest way to check the loading and temperatures for the video card and processors is in the MSI Afterburner program. If desired, you can even display these and many other parameters on top of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion image.

What temperatures are dangerous? Processors and video cards have different operating temperatures. For video cards, they are usually 60-80 degrees Celsius. The processors are slightly lower - 40-70 degrees. If the processor temperature is higher, then you should check the condition of the thermal paste. It may have dried out and needs to be replaced.

If the video card is heating up, then you should use the driver or the official utility from the manufacturer. You need to increase the number of revolutions of the coolers and see if the operating temperature drops.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion slows down. Low FPS. Frame rate drops. Decision

With stutters and low frame rates in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, the first step is to lower the graphics settings. Of course, there are a lot of them, so before reducing everything in a row, you should find out exactly how certain settings affect performance.

Screen resolution. In short, this is the number of points that make up the picture of the game. The higher the resolution, the higher the load on the video card. However, the increase in load is negligible, so reducing the screen resolution should only be the last resort, when everything else does not help.

Texture quality. Typically, this setting determines the resolution of texture files. Decrease the quality of textures if the video card has a small amount of video memory (less than 4 GB) or if a very old one is used HDD, the spindle speed of which is less than 7200.

Model quality(sometimes just details). This setting determines which set of 3D models will be used in the game. The higher the quality, the more polygons. Accordingly, high-poly models require more computing power video cards (not to be confused with the amount of video memory!), which means that this parameter should be reduced on video cards with a low core or memory frequency.

Shadows. They are implemented in different ways. In some games, shadows are created dynamically, that is, they are calculated in real time every second of the game. Such dynamic shadows load both the processor and the video card. In order to optimize, developers often abandon the full rendering and add a pre-render of shadows to the game. They are static, because in fact they are just textures that are superimposed on top of the main textures, which means they load memory, and not the core of the video card.

Often, developers add additional settings related to shadows:

  • Shadow Resolution - determines how detailed the shadow cast by the object will be. If the game has dynamic shadows, then it loads the core of the video card, and if a pre-created render is used, then it “eats” the video memory.
  • Soft shadows - smoothing out bumps on the shadows themselves, usually this option is given along with dynamic shadows. Regardless of the type of shadows, it loads the video card in real time.

Smoothing. It allows you to get rid of ugly corners at the edges of objects by using a special algorithm, the essence of which is usually to generate several images at once and compare them, calculating the most “smooth” image. There are many different anti-aliasing algorithms that vary in their level of impact on the performance of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.

For example, MSAA works head-on, creating 2, 4, or 8 renders at once, so the frame rate is reduced by 2, 4, or 8 times, respectively. Algorithms such as FXAA and TAA operate a little differently, achieving a smooth image by calculating only the edges and using some other tricks. Because of this, they do not reduce performance as much.

Lighting. As in the case of anti-aliasing, there are different algorithms for lighting effects: SSAO, HBAO, HDAO. All of them use the resources of the video card, but they do it differently depending on the video card itself. The fact is that the HBAO algorithm was promoted mainly on video cards from Nvidia (GeForce line), so it works best on the “green” ones. HDAO, on the other hand, is optimized for AMD graphics cards. SSAO is the simplest type of lighting, it consumes the least resources, so in case of slowdowns in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, it is worth switching to it.

What should be lowered first? Shadows, anti-aliasing, and lighting effects are usually the most stressful, so it's best to start with them.

Often gamers themselves have to deal with the optimization of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. For almost all major releases, there are various related and forums where users share their ways to improve productivity.

One of them is a special program called WinOptimizer. It is made specifically for those who do not want to manually clean up the computer from various temporary files, delete unnecessary registry entries and edit the startup list. WinOptimizer will do this for you, as well as analyze your computer to find ways to improve application and game performance.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion lags. Big game delay. Decision

Many people confuse "lag" with "lag", but these problems have completely different causes. The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion lags when the frame rate at which the image is displayed on the monitor decreases, and lags when the delay when accessing the server or any other host is too high.

That is why "lags" can only be in network games. The reasons are different: bad network code, physical distance from servers, network congestion, incorrectly configured router, low Internet connection speed.

However, the latter is the least common. In online games, communication between the client and the server occurs by exchanging relatively short messages, so even 10 MB per second should be enough for the eyes.

There is no sound in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. I can not hear anything. Decision

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion works, but for some reason does not sound - this is another problem that gamers face. Of course, you can play like that, but it's still better to figure out what's the matter.

First you need to determine the scope of the problem. Where exactly is there no sound - only in the game or in general on the computer? If only in the game, then perhaps this is due to the fact that the sound card is very old and does not support DirectX.

If there is no sound at all, then the matter is definitely in the computer settings. Perhaps the sound card drivers are not installed correctly, or maybe there is no sound due to some specific error of our favorite Windows OS.

Controls not working in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion does not recognize a mouse, keyboard, or gamepad. Decision

How to play if it is impossible to control the process? The problems of supporting specific devices are out of place here, because we are talking about familiar devices - keyboard, mouse and controller.

Thus, errors in the game itself are practically excluded, almost always the problem is on the user's side. You can solve it in different ways, but, one way or another, you will have to turn to the driver. Usually, when you connect a new device, the operating system immediately tries to use one of the standard drivers, but some models of keyboards, mice, and gamepads are not compatible with them.

Thus, you need to find out the exact model of the device and try to find exactly its driver. Often, devices from well-known gaming brands come with their own software kits, since the standard windows driver corny cannot ensure the correct operation of all the functions of a particular device.

If you don’t want to look for drivers for all devices separately, you can use the program Driver Updater. It is designed to automatically search for drivers, so you only need to wait for the scan results and download the necessary drivers in the program interface.

Quite often the brakes in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion can be caused by viruses. In this case, there is no difference how powerful the video card is in the system unit. You can check your computer and clean it of viruses and other unwanted software using special programs. For example NOD32 . The antivirus has proven itself from the best side and has received the approval of millions of users around the world.

ZoneAlarm is suitable for both personal use, and for small businesses, is able to protect a computer with an operating Windows system 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP from any attacks: phishing, viruses, malware, spyware and other cyber threats. New users are given a 30-day free trial.

Nod32 is an antivirus from ESET, which has received many awards for its contribution to the development of security. On the developer's website, versions of anti-virus programs are available both for PC and for mobile devices, a 30-day trial is provided. There are special conditions for business.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion torrent download does not work. Decision

If the distribution kit of the game was downloaded via torrent, then in principle there can be no guarantees of work. Torrents and repacks are almost never updated through official apps and do not work over the network, because in the course of hacking, hackers cut out everything from games network functions, which are often used for license verification.

Using such versions of games is not only inconvenient, but even dangerous, because very often many files have been changed in them. For example, to bypass protection, pirates modify an EXE file. However, no one knows what else they do with it. Maybe they're building a self-fulfilling software. For example, which, when the game is first launched, will be integrated into the system and will use its resources to ensure the well-being of hackers. Or, giving access to the computer to third parties. There are no guarantees and there cannot be.

In addition, the use of pirated versions is, according to our publication, theft. The developers have spent a lot of time creating the game, investing their own money in the hope that their offspring will pay off. And every work must be paid.

Therefore, if you encounter any problems with games downloaded from torrents or hacked using certain means, you should immediately remove the “pirate”, clean your computer with an antivirus and a licensed copy of the game. This will not only save you from dubious software, but also allow you to download updates for the game and receive official support from its creators.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion throws an error about a missing DLL file. Decision

As a rule, problems associated with the absence of DLLs occur when The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is launched, however, sometimes the game can access certain DLLs in the process and, without finding them, crash in the most impudent manner.

To fix this error, you need to find the necessary DLL and install it on the system. The easiest way to do this is with a program. DLL fixer, which scans the system and helps you quickly find missing libraries.

If your problem turned out to be more specific, or if the method described in this article did not help, then you can ask other users in our "" section. They will promptly help you!

We thank you for your attention!

Hey dude, I hope it helps. Blockhead has indeed remained established since OCO...

TES-Diesel modding

Well, did it help? By the way, I found a solution for myself as well. I think it's worth leaving it here for the archive. So, in order for the character not to stop when loading and at the same time the second version of OCO works normally, you need to install another version of Blockhead (bugs were observed on 9.2, installed 6.0 - everything is fine).

I haven't checked yet. (

I'll get to the game tonight, I hope)

Does anyone know why the game crashes on save?

Game time 150 hours. The size of the save is 9mb.

The game crashes when saving in \ after the tavern "Three piranhas" addon Alive and Dead.

The reasons may be different: random access memory not enough, not enough disk space, viruses on your computer, corrupted saver....

Oblivion began to fly out when moving to another location. Loading somewhere around 95% and it crashes. Help mi:S

There is a small solution, it may not help much, but it will fly out less.
Go to documents>Bethesda Softworks>Oblivion>Oblivion.ini>and try to change the following values (search for strings is done by pressing ctrl+f):
bRunMiddleLowLevelProcess=1 - set to 0
uInterior Cell Buffer=3 - set to 1
uExterior Cell Buffer=144 (if you have 2GB of RAM, if 4 then 288)
bUseThreadedBlood=1 (optional, preferably enabled if you have a multi-core processor)
bUseThreadedMorpher=1 (optional, preferably enabled if you have a multi-core processor)
bPreemptivelyUnloadCells=1 (unload unused data from RAM, enable if there is more than 512MB of memory)
iPreloadSizeLimit=26214400 (the size of the cache stored by the game on the hard disk for 1 GB of RAM is 52428800)
bUseHardDriveCache=1 (Allows the game to use hard drive cache)
bLocalMapShader=0 (the game will not apply a "pencil sketch" effect over the terrain map)
iMaxDecalsPerFrame=10 (number of blood trails that can be displayed simultaneously on the screen)
iShadowMapResolution An alternative to iShadowMapResolution (the parameter is responsible for the resolution of shadow maps cast by characters) can be set to 256, for example: iShadowMapResolution=256 or 1024.
bAllow30Shaders=1 (increases game performance on graphics cards supporting 3rd revision pixel and vertex shaders)
bLandscapeBlend=0 (makes the LOD landscape less blurry)
bUseWaterDepth=0 (makes water opaque)
bDSoundHWAcceleration=0 (prevents the game from using hardware sound acceleration)
iNumHavokThreads=5 (optional, preferably enabled if you have a multi-core processor)
bSelectivePurgeUnusedOnFastTravel=1 (Purges unnecessary data from the RAM when fast traveling)
iMinGrassSize=140 (grass density, the larger the parameter, the lower the density)
iThreads=9 (optional, preferably enabled if you have a multi-core processor)
_______________________________________________________________________________
As for programs and mods, you can put: Memory Purger, Streamline, TeS4Edit, Operation Optimization (makes textures less detailed), DeParallaxer Mod (removes the effect of volume textures)
Maybe things are simpler: a crooked mod or a conflict between them, try to turn off the mods one by one and check how the game will work.
Hope it helps and good luck

Vlados, perhaps the load order is to blame. Wrye Bash, BOSS and OBMM to the rescue.

Pretty unwieldy mod, it's likely that it could be the cause. The same goes for Valenwood Improved, Skyrim and Waalx Animals & Creatures. The more globals installed at the same time - the greater the likelihood of glitches.

Hello, thanks for your reply. The loading order changed, first global mods, and then those that weigh little, etc., and vice versa. Wrye Bash does not find conflicts, every time after installing the mod I do a validation. But I noticed one thing, as you wrote to me, that the more global mods, the more crashes. I thought at first that my RAM was not enough, although 16 GB at a frequency of 2400 MHz, I think, is enough. I decided to reserve 50GB from the hard drive, but the problem was not solved. I don't want to turn off mods, I'm used to it :(

What causes the camera to move to the right and up in the first person view and how is it treated?

Perhaps the whole thing is in the Enhanced Camera mod, when you swim or hold a weapon, it seems that your hand is twisted, it is worth putting more new version and the problem should be solved. If there is no mod, then you can try to install it.

I seem to be the only one who has encountered this problem, but you never know, suddenly someone knows the solution: D The fact is that the character, when viewed from the first person, does not see his hands. As I understand it, they are, only located somewhere below, behind the scenes: D I tried to shoot spells, but they fly much lower than the target, and when talking with an NPC, they look up, as if my character is a giant. If you just look around, then everything is fine, the character's body is displayed normally, the animations all work too, when switching views, the crosshair remains in place. But as soon as you get a weapon, or cast a spell, it turns out such a trouble. I tried to download the latest version from the nexus, it did not help. obse latest version installed.

Figured it out [:)] If someone suddenly encountered a similar problem, download the updated skeleton from here

I have the same problem, tell me which skeleton are you talking about?

As I understand it, my earlier question will remain unanswered ....

Does Oblivion really work so well for everyone with a bunch of globals, quest add-ons, tons of HD retextures?

Unfortunately, I have the same problem, I used to have about 230 plugins, many of which are global: Silgrad Tower, Hammerfell, Black Marsh, Improved to Skyrim, Elsweyr, Valenwood, etc. There were a lot of retextures, I changed almost everything that is possible on HD. Went into Oblivion.ini, made better water reflections, 4k shadows, etc. As a result, there were crashes, but only when moving to locations or in places where there are most objects, for example, in Anvil. Put a lot of programs for productivity (Memory Purger, Streamline, TeS4Edit) this solved the problem a little. It seems to me that this is just the limit of the game, to withstand such a number of locations, objects that have their own uniqueness, for a 2007 game, this is just an epilogue. But in your case, you can climb into Oblivion.ini (I described above what helps to optimize the game), put the above programs, try to test each mod separately. It took me quite a bit to pull all this (16GB of RAM, GTX 780ti, i7 4770k) and I also reserved about 100GB by the system, xs, does it help or not.
Good luck, if you find a solution to this problem, then let me know

Takirell

Explain one thing to me, please. Here I have 1 GB of video memory, 3.50 GB (with about 1 GB always busy) of RAM and a Pentium Dual-Core 3.20 GHz processor. Is this enough to enable high textures (not Qarl, but regular ones) + install Oblivion Character Overhaul v 2.03 + New race + several mods for weapons and clothes? I'm wondering how memory works. Here OCO weighs about 800 mb and how much it loads memory and most importantly when? If I'm in the forest, where there is not a single chela of the standard race and in general, then at that moment the system will not be loaded with this mod? Or let's say the external textures of cities start loading only when I go directly to the city "And how much does 2x anti-aliasing load the system? All this together is normal for my system?"

Well, I'll tell you this. Obla itself does not eat more than 2 GB of RAM (console style). To fix this, you need a specialist. patch.
Next - undoubtedly, the textures from Karl are divine and well done, but even installing them + optimized meshes for this pack, the game in some places gives a wild FPS drawdown, and no matter how you tweak ini files, pick the Nvidia control panel - you won’t get rid of friezes and jamming completely. It often happens to me when I go into the dungeon and for some reason I suddenly get 1-5 FPS. After restarting the game - everything goes away, after a while - again.

In the Oble, as in Skyrim, a rather poor system for loading textures and models is used, this is evidenced by the inscription "Loading the Area" in the Oble, for example, as well as jamming, a terrible freeze, etc. at the moment when the same loading occurs. This action contributes to crashes, especially for those who have heavy textures. In general, I have seen dozens or even hundreds of mods for textures with 4k and 8k resolution, and this is the most complete nonsense that you can think of. Why? Yes, because putting such textures on rather ugly models is at least strange and usually leads to problems with the game. I personally verified this myself. In general, if you want to get confused with retextures, then after installing them, put ENB as well. From my practice in Skyrim, I can say one thing, with Textures and WITHOUT ENB, crashes are more frequent than with ENB.

I have FCOM without retextures at all. That is, only FCOM and a couple of mods. The ini file is tweaked as soon as possible and impossible, there are all sorts of optimizers, everything is configured through the Nvidia panel, in general everything is conjured to the maximum and in the end I have what I have. (I have 5 GB of RAM, 1 GB video card).
For the sake of interest, I went to a friend, he has a computer on a new generation: Proc - Intel Core i7 4790k, 16 GB of RAM, and a video card 980 Giraffe.
His lags are less noticeable, but they still occur quite often. It's about the game itself. Skyrim is easier in this regard.
Of course, there are programs that will compress textures from mods without much loss of quality, but in practice this does not help much, I'll tell you. As for weapons and clothes - here you can put it without much thought, as a rule there should be no problems.

I don't install Quarl. I mean regular in-game textures. How do they influence? And which patch are you referring to? How did you set up the game through the Nvidia Panel?

Regular in-game textures are already compressed, compressed and packed into bsa archives. They are optimized for the game and will work fine on "ultra" on your machine, I can say that for sure. This patch is here: http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php
How did you set it up through the panel? Easy.
Open the Nvidia control panel, then a window opens and select "Manage 3D Settings" in it, select Oblivion.exe from the list of programs (not a launcher or OBSE launcher) or add it if it is not in the list, and then disable and enable the necessary parameters)

And someone can share their experience on the topic of the optimal algorithm for installing plugins?
I have already tortured the game to the point where I can’t determine the actual cause of the failure (the game just hangs at the loading stage, and the editor crashes when trying to render. cells - crashes).

There are already a lot of gluing (for the sake of reducing the load list, and the matter was not limited to UL, a lot was glued - weapons, clothes, animals ... But it worked up to a certain point!), Alterations for the sake of compatibility (yes, I preferred to straighten one of the " conflicting" plugins to ensure compatibility, and not to make a patch (see above), but I did not keep records of what and when I changed).

"Clean" game goes quite well. And the same "Oblivion with guns" is not loaded with anything, but still spinning ...

I think now it’s easier to roll everything into a clean game in a new way. But the issue of exotic, and not so, incompatibilities and specific installation errors is very worrisome.

For example, Synx (or line elves?) have a "hard" path to the texture in the female ren-head mesh (Head01). Is this a bug or a feature?

How do various OBSE plugins and other stray things fit together, and what combinations should be avoided? Yes, and "regular" plugins do not always / not all unsolvable incompatibilities are mentioned (for example, for some time I got along under HGEC Ren "s Beauty Pack & Capuchine" sCE + MHE, although this possibility was denied in the description for MHE, but BashPatch of all reconciled).

Etc...
Yes, and a lot of new versions of plug-ins came out (I abandoned Nirn for more than 2 years - Wasteland, it's just called that ...). I haven't looked at the same WAC yet. And how he will make friends with the UL of the latest release and OOO 1.34b5 - I can only guess. But the need for OCO also raises serious doubts, but I really like the setting through ini, which is so lacking in the same LLC ...

And I don’t even imagine what will come out of the UV_III & DR6 bundle. Probably RGOM... 8)

The problem of validation is especially sad ... Very conflicting recommendations are given ...

However, with the generation of BashPatch, there are also ambiguities, such as "am I doing everything right" ...
And after all, often this is a matter of combining plugins, which is not described anywhere, but many people know. Or not many...

Known Issues and Solutions

Installation problems
If you've uninstalled and reinstalled Oblivion multiple times, some systems may throw an error the next time you try to uninstall Oblivion. To fix this, insert the Oblivion disc and run the setup.exe program. This action will fix the error and you will be able to uninstall and reinstall the game.

Saved games
Your saved games are located in My Documents\My Games\Oblivion (or \My Documents\My Games\Oblivion).

Before installing the game
Before installing Oblivion, please make sure your computer meets the system requirements for the game.

We also recommend that you make preparations by running a disk check (ScanDisk) and a defragmenter (Disk Defragmenter) prior to installation. These utilities are part of the Windows® operating system and can find and fix disc problems that cause problems with installation and/or the game itself.

To run these programs and optimize the performance of your hard drive:

  1. Open "My Computer".
  2. Right-click on the drive icon where you plan to install the game (usually C:).
  3. Click on "Properties"
  4. Select the "Service" tab.
  5. Click "Run Check" to run Scandisk.
  6. When Scandisk is finished, repeat steps 1-3 and click on "Run Defragmenter" to launch Disk Defragmenter.

    Please note that defragmentation can take a long time. It is better to start it in the evening and leave it to work at night.

A.T.I. Crossfire
Game performance on systems using ATI Crossfire will be degraded until ATI releases updated drivers that support Oblivion.

Error messages when launching Oblivion:

They appear as messages about dlls not found, like "d3dx9_27.dll not found."

To fix the error, open the Oblivion DVD and find the DXREDIST folder. Open it and run DXSETUP.exe. You will install the version of DirectX required for Oblivion to work.

Inability to create new saved games
If you press the Tab key while entering your character's name during character creation, there may be a problem when the game tries to write the save to the appropriate folder. It occurs because the character name is included in the name of the save file in Windows. This usually happens when you try to switch to another program with Alt-Tab while typing a name. If this happens, then autosaves and quicksaves will function correctly, but saves via the menu will not work. The problem can be solved by renaming the hero, this opportunity will be provided just before the exit from the prison at the end of the character generation process.

The following will be helpful if the character creation process has been completed:

The player name can be changed using the console by pressing the ` (tilde) key and typing the following: player.SetActorFullName "Player Name" (where Player Name = character name). Press RETURN and exit the console window by pressing tilde again.

It is also possible to save games using the console by pressing ` (tilde) and typing the following: save filename (where filename = the name of the save file you choose). Press RETURN and exit the console window by pressing tilde again.

Input problems
Keyboard input problems can be the result of peripheral control devices. Editing Oblivion.ini may fix the problem. The Oblivion.ini file is located in the My Documents\My Games\Oblivion folder. In the section, change the "bUse Joystick=1" setting to "bUse Joystick=0" or simply disable the peripherals. Make sure you save your changes. Please note that changes to the Oblivion.ini file will not be saved if the game is running at the time the changes are made.

Frequent "crashes" of the game due to an old system file
For some users, the game may crash due to an old system file. They may be due to the "mpeg2dmx.ax" file. Just rename it to "mpeg2dmx.ax.old" to fix the issue.

Frequent "crashes" of the game when an HP printer is connected
The program that comes with the HP printer may cause the game to crash. Before launching Oblivion: Press Ctr-Alt-Del to bring up the task manager. Go to the Processes tab. Click right click Click on any process that begins with the letters "HP" and select "End". After that, you can start Oblivion. "FF" icons in the system tray
Some players have reported "FF" icons appearing in the system tray during or after playing Oblivion. These are icons from a separate video/audio decoder you installed called "FFDShow." This program handles Oblivion sound files, which some users have reported slowing down the game and leaving tray icons behind. Remove them by simply hovering over them after the game is over. Removing FFDShow may fix this, but it is NOT required. You can follow the steps below to stop FFDShow from processing audio for Oblivion.

Instructions for disabling FFDShow for Oblivion without completely uninstalling it:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click "All Programs" (or just "Programs", depending on the Windows setup scheme)
  3. Go to the ffdshow folder.
  4. Click "Audio decoder configuration."
  5. On the left panel, click on "Info & debug." This is the second line on the list.
  6. In the right panel, closer to the bottom, find the line with the checkbox "Don" t use ffdshow in: "
  7. Check the box and in the text box below it (it's highlighted when you check this box), add "oblivion.exe" (don't use quotes). If there are already entries in the field, type a semicolon (;) after them, followed by oblivion.exe. DO NOT use spaces as ffdshow treats them as part of the filename. The correct entry is "explorer.exe;oblivion.exe" (without quotes).
  8. Finally, click "Ok" and run Oblivion.

Working with a gamepad

While the PC version of Oblivion is best suited for keyboard and mouse control, you can play using gamepads from various manufacturers. Due to their differences, you may need to make some changes to the Oblivion.ini file located in My Documents\My Games\Oblivion. The following are settings that can be changed to make an Xbox 360 controller attached to a PC work better with Oblivion. However, it should be noted that since the PC version of the game is optimized for keyboard and mouse play, the game experience will NOT be the same as when using the 360 controller for the Xbox 360 version of the game. These settings can also be applied to other gamepads, but the values given will have to be changed again. Finally, the button assignment must be set in the game itself in the "Settings-Controls" section called from the main menu, however, DO NOT change the movement settings (Forward, Back, Left, Right), as this will overwrite the changes made to the Oblivion.ini file.

These are the default Oblivion.ini values:

iJoystickMoveFrontBack=2
iJoystickMoveLeftRight=1
fJoystickMoveFBMult=1.0000
fJoystickMoveLRMult=1.0000
iJoystickLookUpDown=6
iJoystickLookLeftRight=3
fJoystickLookUDMult=0.0020
fJoystickLookLRMult=0.0020

Modify them in such a way as to improve the functionality of the 360 controller attached to the PC.
;X = 1, Y = 2, Z = 3, XRot = 4, YRot = 5, ZRot = 6
iJoystickMoveFrontBack=2
iJoystickMoveLeftRight=1
fJoystickMoveFBMult=2.0000
fJoystickMoveLRMult=2.0000
iJoystickLookUpDown=5
iJoystickLookLeftRight=4
fJoystickLookUDMult=0.7500
fJoystickLookLRMult=0.7500

Make sure you save your changes. Please note that changes to the Oblivion.ini file will not be saved if the game is running at the time the changes are made.

Updated launch menu (Oblivion Launcher)
The updated launch menu now includes options to change the auto-detected "Video Quality" settings. These include "Very Low", "Low", "Medium", "High", and "Very High". If you select "Default", your system will be analyzed again and you will be offered the best settings for it.

If you encounter The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion slows down, crashes, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion won't start, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion won't install, controls don't work in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, there is no sound, pop-ups errors, saves not working in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – we offer you the most common ways to solve these problems.

First, check if your PC meets the minimum system requirements:

  • OS: Windows XP
  • Processor: 2 GHz
  • Memory: 512 MB
  • Video: Direct3D-compatible video card with 128 MB of memory
  • HDD: 4.6 GB free space

Be sure to update your video card drivers and other software

Before you remember the worst words and express them towards the developers, do not forget to go to the official website of the manufacturer of your video card and download the latest drivers. Often, specially optimized drivers are prepared for the release of games. You can also try installing a later version of the drivers if the problem is not solved by installing the current version.

It is important to remember that you should only download the final versions of video cards - try not to use beta versions, as they may have a large number of not found and not fixed errors.

Do not forget that games often require the latest version of DirectX to be installed, which can always be downloaded from the official Microsoft website.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion won't launch

Many problems with launching games happen due to incorrect installation. Check if there were any errors during the installation, try to uninstall the game and run the installer again, after disabling the antivirus - often the files necessary for the game to work are deleted by mistake. It is also important to remember that the path to the folder with the installed game should not contain Cyrillic characters - use only Latin letters and numbers for directory names.

It still does not hurt to check if there is enough space on the HDD for installation. You can try to run the game as Administrator in compatibility mode with different versions of Windows.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion slows down. Low FPS. Logs. Friezes. hangs up

First - install the latest drivers for the video card, from this FPS in the game can rise significantly. Also check the computer's load in the task manager (opened by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + ESCAPE). If, before starting the game, you see that some process is consuming too many resources, turn off its program or simply end this process from the task manager.

Next, go to the graphics settings in the game. First of all, turn off anti-aliasing and try lowering the settings responsible for post-processing. Many of them consume a lot of resources and disabling them will significantly increase performance without greatly affecting the quality of the picture.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion crashes to desktop

If The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion often crashes to your desktop, try lowering the graphics quality to start solving the problem. It is possible that your computer simply does not have enough performance and the game cannot work correctly. It is also worth checking for updates - most modern games have a system automatic installation new patches. Check if this option is disabled in the settings.

Black screen in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

More often than not, the problem with the black screen is an issue with the GPU. Check if your video card satisfies minimum requirements and install the latest drivers. Sometimes a black screen is the result of insufficient CPU performance.

If everything is fine with the hardware, and it meets the minimum requirements, try switching to another window (ALT + TAB), and then return to the game window.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is not installed. Installation stuck

First of all, check if you have enough HDD space for installation. Remember that the installation program requires the declared amount of space, plus 1-2 gigabytes, to work correctly free space on system drive. In general, remember the rule - the system drive should always have at least 2 gigabytes of free space for temporary files. Otherwise, both games and programs may not work correctly or refuse to start at all.

Installation problems can also occur due to lack of internet connection or unstable work. Also, do not forget to suspend the antivirus while installing the game - sometimes it interferes with the correct copying of files or deletes them by mistake, considering them viruses.

Saves not working in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

By analogy with the previous solution, check the availability of free space on the HDD - both on the one where the game is installed and on the system drive. Often save files are stored in a folder of documents, which is located separately from the game itself.

Controls not working in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Sometimes the controls in the game do not work due to the simultaneous connection of several input devices. Try disabling the gamepad, or if for some reason you have two keyboards or mice connected, leave only one pair of devices. If the gamepad does not work for you, then remember that only controllers that are defined as Xbox joysticks officially support games. If your controller is defined differently, try using programs that emulate Xbox joysticks (for example, x360ce).

Sound not working in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Check if the sound works in other programs. After that, check if the sound is turned off in the settings of the game itself and if the sound playback device is selected there, to which your speakers or headset are connected. Next, while the game is running, open the mixer and check if the sound is muted there.

If you are using an external sound card- check for new drivers on the manufacturer's website.
