ZTE Nubia Z7 mini is the new flagship from China. Nubia Z7 Max - Specifications Various sensors perform various quantitative measurements and convert physical indicators into signals that a mobile device recognizes

ZTE smartphones of the Nubia line are of high quality and stylish design, but most importantly, they are significantly cheaper than their counterparts from more famous brands. Therefore, it is not surprising that Nubia smartphones are becoming more and more popular.

Not so long ago on sale new smartphone Nubia Z7 and its mini version Nubia Z7 mini. True, with a screen diagonal of 5 inches, the device can hardly be called miniature.

Main technical characteristics

The heart of the smartphone is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core chip clocked at 2 GHz. The video accelerator Adreno 330 is responsible for the graphics. There are 2 gigabytes on board the device random access memory and 16 for storing personal information, which is traditionally increased using a micro-SD memory card.

Dual SIM smartphone Nubia Z7 mini supports all popular media wireless communication: 4G, 3G, CDMA, 2G (GSM), Bluetooth version 4.0, Wi-Fi and GPS.

Such characteristics allow the device to "fly". The power of the processor and video card is amazing, there is not the slightest hint of any delays in the work. If you are a fan of playing on your phone, Nubia Z7 mini is definitely for you. Easily launched on the device latest games on the highest settings.

What's in the box

In a stylish hardboard box, the happy owner of the ZTE Nubia Z7 mini will find the phone itself, Charger and a cable for connecting to a micro-USB computer. Headphones are not included, unfortunately.

Design

Nubia Z7 mini has retained the appearance of the Nubia line of devices. The only innovation is a cover made of matte plastic, on which fingerprints do not appear. The device itself is comfortable to hold in your hand, and the assembly is top notch.

Display

5 inch touch screen Made by Sharp with Full HD resolution, it is protected by third-generation Gorilla Glass. The picture is clear, color reproduction and viewing angles are excellent. Some may think that the brightness of the screen is not high enough, but on a sunny day you can use it without problems.

cameras

ZTE has a 13-megapixel main camera and a 5-megapixel video call camera. We can say with full confidence that the main one is one of the best mobile cameras in the world. And there is nothing surprising in this, because its manufacturer is Sony. In a word, the same camera is installed in many other flagship smartphones, for example, in Huawei Honor and HTC One. And the front camera does an excellent job with its main function, the quality of video calls is impeccable.

Accumulator battery

Unfortunately, the 2300 mAh battery performs extremely poorly. The reason is clear - a powerful processor with a graphics card and a display with Full HD resolution. With the Wi-Fi receiver turned on and at maximum screen brightness, the Nubia Z7 mini lasts less than three hours.

findings

You can't help but like the Nubia Z7 mini. Beautiful design, high-end screen, serious stuffing and a camera made by Sony. The downside, as you already understood, is only one - a short battery life.

Nubia Z7 mini can be called almost a flagship. Almost, for the reason that the frequency of the central processor is not enough, and the battery also failed. If you dream of a one hundred percent inexpensive flagship, then pay attention to the older model - the Nubia Z7.

ZTE Nubia Z7 mini video review

Detailed testing of the updated mini-flagship of the ZTE premium series

The Chinese giant ZTE has once again updated its line of popular nubia smartphones, which is positioned as a series of premium products (as opposed to "regular" smartphones, of which the company produces a lot under its own ZTE brand). Traditionally, the manufacturer supports several such “premium” nubia models in its assortment at the same time: the so-called “mini-version” always coexists with the flagship, with the corresponding prefix in the name. Such a new "miniature" version of the next flagship was a model called ZTE nubia Z7 mini, which in sense is a direct continuation of its predecessor ZTE nubia Z5 (Z5s) mini, but in fact differs little in terms of dimensions from the previous "full-size" flagship ZTE nubia Z5(Z5s). Now the "mini version" is a five-inch smartphone with Full HD resolution and the most powerful modern hardware platform Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, which does not meet the definition of "miniature" even in the world of "shovel phones".

It is only worth recalling that not so long ago, the new line of ZTE nubia smartphones, introduced on the world market for the first time, has gained sufficient popularity among people who are seriously interested in mobile technology, arousing genuine interest in a successful combination of very advanced technical and hardware characteristics with fairly digestible prices. However, despite the presence of official suppliers of ZTE products, nubia series smartphones hardly reach our market. In order to make a timely review, it is necessary, as is usually the case in such cases, to describe a device intended for markets in other regions (in this case, Asia). And this means that not all functions included in the phone will work in our normal mode, and something will have to be solved with the help of flashing. However, for true fans of the brand, this has never been an obstacle, and unofficial suppliers now offer a smartphone in Russian online stores, so purchasing it will not be such an insurmountable task for those who wish.

Contents of delivery

The next smartphone from the ZTE nubia family received exactly the same packaging in appearance and structure as its brothers in the line were supplied earlier. This is a very small box, almost the size of a smartphone itself, made of hard white cardboard with a red layer in the middle. The packaging looks stylish and expensive due to the fact that there are no pictures on its surfaces and only the minimum necessary information is applied.

Inside, everything is also arranged very neatly, in two small internal compartments a poor set of accessories is stored: a very small compact charger (5 V, 1 A), a USB connection cable and several thin paper books. The packaging does not differ in scope, but the box itself and the contents in it are presented so pathetically that the most favorable mood is immediately created for further acquaintance with the product.

Appearance and usability

Unlike the Z5s model mentioned above, which for some reason got a glossy and easily soiled case, the same version is used here as in the bulk of the series products. The plastic parts of the ZTE nubia Z7 mini have rough, matte and non-slip surfaces, which is why the device as a whole turned out to be non-marking. In principle, we are talking about only one detail here - a removable back cover, which completely covers not only the back, but also all the sides, putting on the smartphone's body in the manner of a casing. All hardware buttons, respectively, are fixed on this cover itself, so it is impossible to use the device without it.

In general, the design of the ZTE nubia Z7 mini is very calm, the smartphone does not look expensive or stylish, it is a completely ordinary-looking, rustic mobile device made of matte plastic. The design of the new nubia certainly does not claim to be premium, there is absolutely nothing to show off to the owner of this device. And at the same time, upon closer examination, the smartphone exudes some kind of nobility, it is immediately clear that this is not a cheap Chinese craft, but a device with a pedigree.

The device turned out to be very thin, it fits perfectly in the hand, having well-balanced overall dimensions, but you can’t call it light. The smartphone feels quite hefty, although you quickly get used to its mass.

Case ZTE nubia Z7 mini has a monoblock structure with a removable back cover, which is held by several plastic latches. The cover can be easily removed; for this purpose, a corresponding ledge is provided on one of the ends. As already mentioned, when it is removed, all side keys are removed along with the cover itself.

Under the cover are two slots for Micro-SIM cards, as well as a slot for a microSD memory card that supports the installation of cards up to 64 GB. SIM-cards fit quite tightly into their slots, a stuck card can be pushed with a sharp object through special slots, but it is inconvenient to use cards with adapters in such slots. It doesn’t happen once at a time, but one day our Nano-SIM to Micro-SIM adapter got stuck in one of the slots so tightly that I had to resort to tweezers.

On the back surface there is traditionally a small window of the main camera with a single-section LED flash attached to it, which can work as a brightly shining flashlight with the help of pre-installed software.

At the bottom there is a slot for sound output from the main speakers. The sound is only slightly muffled when the phone is placed on a hard surface with the screen facing up, as there are two slightly protruding protrusions.

The front surface is completely covered by a flat protective glass Gorilla Glass 3. Window front camera and the eyes of the sensors are hidden under the glass in the upper part above the screen, next to the speaker grille.

The role of the indicator light on nubia smartphones is traditionally performed by a round touch button at the bottom under the screen. The circle slowly pulses with bright red light to indicate charging modes and incoming events - the technology is called Breath Light (“breathing light”). The indicator functions can be configured in a special section of the menu. The two illuminated dots on the sides of the circle are the usual Back and Menu touch buttons, devoid of their classic designations.

Mechanical controls are located on the right side of the device: a power button and a lock button, and a little higher above it is a paired volume rocker. The location of the buttons is comfortable, they can be easily reached with one finger. The keys themselves are metallized, large enough, it is not difficult to find them blindly. The key travel is short, but quite noticeable - in general, there are no complaints about the mechanical controls.

The universal Micro-USB connector is located at the bottom end, it supports the external device connection mode (OTG), so you can connect a flash drive to the connector through a special adapter and read information directly from it.

Headphone audio jack (3.5 mm) is located on the top. There are no plugs or covers for the slots and connectors of the device, since the smartphone is not protected from water and dirt. Fastening for the strap on the body of the device is also not found.

As for the color options of the smartphone, this time there are several more, in addition to the standard pair of white and black. Now the buyer can also choose from such bright colors as blue, green, red and yellow. This is completely unusual for nubia smartphones, the design of which was created specifically for the “classics”, and those devices were more rigorous. appearance. Obviously, in the wake of the general fashion (see IPhone 5c), the company's marketers decided to turn their product to the younger generation of mobile technology users, ignoring the style laid down in the basis of the line.

Screen

The ZTE nubia Z7 mini is equipped with an IPS (CGS) LCD touchscreen. The screen dimensions are 62 × 110 mm, the diagonal is 5 inches, the resolution is 1920 × 1080 pixels. Such a parameter as the density of pixels per inch is 443 ppi here - the dot density is very high. Outside, the screen is covered with protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The thickness of the side frames from the edge of the screen to the edge of the case is about 3 mm - the frames are very narrow.

The brightness of the display can be adjusted manually, or you can use automatic adjustment. When you bring the smartphone to your ear, the screen is locked using the proximity sensor. Multi-touch technology allows you to process several touches at the same time.

A detailed examination using measuring instruments was carried out by the editor of the "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" sections Alexey Kudryavtsev. Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the test sample.

On the screen of this smartphone, a protective film was initially and most likely factory-glued, which we removed. The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the off screens (on the left is Nexus 7, on the right is ZTE nubia Z7 mini, then they can be distinguished by size):

The screen of the ZTE nubia Z7 mini is noticeably darker (brightness in the photos is 114 versus 129 for the Nexus 7). The ghosting of reflected objects in the ZTE nubia Z7 mini screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the screen layers (more specifically, between the outer glass and the LCD matrix surface) (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of borders (glass-air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of strong external illumination, but their repair in case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, no worse than the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much easier, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and with a white field displayed in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 430 cd / m², the minimum was 13 cd / m². The maximum brightness is quite high, and given the excellent anti-reflective properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors will be at a high level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by light sensor (located under the slot of the front speaker). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. In complete darkness, the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 13 cd/m² (dark, but readable), in an artificially lit office (approx. outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) increases to a maximum of 430 cd / m². As a result, the auto-brightness function works absolutely adequately. At any brightness level, there is virtually no backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker.

AT this smartphone IPS type matrix is used. Micrographs show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even at large deviations of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen and without inverting shades. For comparison, here are photographs in which the same images are displayed on the screens of ZTE nubia Z7 mini and Nexus 7, while the brightness of the screens is initially set to about 200 cd / m² (on a white field in full screen), and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K. White field perpendicular to the screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field. And a test picture:

Color reproduction is good and colors are saturated on both screens. Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens, and the contrast remained at a high level. And the white box:

The brightness at an angle at the screens decreased (at least 4 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of the ZTE nubia Z7 mini, the brightness drop is less. The black field, when deviated diagonally, is lightened weakly and acquires a red-violet hue or remains almost neutral gray. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is approximately the same!):

And from another angle:

When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black box is very good, but the black box has a pronounced tint:

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is normal - about 740:1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 19 ms (11 ms on + 8 ms off). The transition between grayscale 25% and 75% (according to the numerical value of the color) and back in total takes 29 ms. The gamma curve constructed from 32 points with an equal interval according to the numerical value of the shade of gray did not reveal a blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.39, which is higher than the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve somewhat deviates from the power dependence:

Due to the dynamic (but not very aggressive) adjustment of the brightness of the backlight in accordance with the nature of the displayed image (brightness decreases on very dark ones), the resulting dependence of brightness on hue (gamma curve) may not correspond to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out at consistent output of grayscale to almost the entire screen. For this reason, we carried out a number of tests - determining contrast and response time, comparing black flare at angles - when displaying special patterns with invariably average brightness, and not monochromatic fields in full screen.

From a practical point of view, the color gamut is equal to sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components to each other:

As a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is slightly compromised, since the color temperature is noticeably higher than the standard 6500 K. The deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) in most of the gray scale is less than 10, which is considered a good indicator for a consumer device, but at the same time, ΔE varies greatly from hue to hue - this negatively affects the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance does not matter much there, and the measurement error of color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

In this smartphone, in the screen settings, it is possible to slightly reduce or increase the color saturation (color contrast, coverage does not change at the same time):

Choose a profile Glow, we get:

And the result when choosing a profile Soft:

If you look closely at the average saturation of the colors, you can determine that the result of the correction corresponds to the names of the profiles. In the first picture a little brighter, more saturated, in the second - a little softer, paler.

Let's summarize. The screen has a fairly high maximum brightness and has good anti-glare properties, so the device, most likely, can be used outdoors without any problems even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. It is permissible to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, the absence of flicker and air gap in the layers of the screen, good black field uniformity, high black stability to deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen plane, as well as the sRGB color gamut and acceptable color balance. In general, the screen quality is very high.

Sound

In terms of sound, the smartphone is quite good. Nothing is said about the presence of a separate sound chip, perhaps it is not here, but there is support for Dolby Digital sound processing technology. The sound emitted by the main speaker is generally not bad, no special distortions were noticed, but this is not the loudest of smartphones. There are no distortions in the auditory dynamics, the voice of a familiar interlocutor, intonations and timbre are well recognizable. The music player is rich in features, and the settings can be influenced to increase the volume and add low frequencies. There is an FM radio as standard on the smartphone, and there is also a voice recorder. The radio works only with connected headphones that act as an antenna. The voice recorder can record a conversation from the line using regular means, in the settings you can even turn on automatic recording of all telephone conversations, if necessary.

Camera

ZTE nubia Z7 mini is equipped with two modules of digital cameras with a resolution of 13 and 5 megapixels. The main rear camera is equipped with a 13 MP matrix with a Sony Exmor IMX214 CMOS sensor with autofocus and a single-section LED flash, it shoots at a resolution of 4208 × 3120.

By default, the camera shoots in automatic mode, but there are two more in the settings: professional (Pro) and also entertaining (Fun). In the latter, the user can apply any of the effects to the picture: "warm", "lomo" or, for example, "fisheye". In professional mode, it is possible to display a two-axis level on the screen and two types of grids (one of them is snail-shaped), as well as timer control. But the most interesting feature of this mode is manual selection of the metering point. Two frames appear on the display: green and pink. Green is responsible for the focus point, and pink is for the metering point. To equalize the exposure to a specific object, you just need to move the pink dot to this object, and the camera will set the desired exposure. A feature like this can be very useful when capturing some specific details quickly, when the rest of the frame is unimportant.

The camera can shoot video in 1080p and UHD (4K) resolution, 1080p mode at 60 frames per second, unfortunately, is not provided. Sample test videos are shown below.

  • Movie #1 (248 MB, 3840×2160 (4K))
  • Movie #2 (68 MB, 1920×1080)

Sample photos with our comments are presented below.

Not bad sharpness in the center, but in the corners it drops noticeably.

Unprocessed noise is visible in the shadows.

Good sharpness in the medium plans, but to the far it drops noticeably.

The sky is very noisy.

Half-processed noise can be seen on the walls and in the shadows.

The camera works out the shadows well - the dynamic range is quite wide.

The numbers of the nearest cars are distinguishable, and in the distance you can make out something.

Sharping on wires is noticeable, as well as problems with white balance.

Macro photography is good for the camera.

The text worked out well, although a little damaged and unsharp in the upper left corner.

The camera turned out to be quite good, although with a considerable share of problems. The sharpness drops off gradually, but quickly enough. You can see areas of blur in the corners of the frame. The camera abuses sharping, and the noise reduction does exactly half: on fragments of a relatively uniform color, you can see both processed noises and the remains of unprocessed ones. And both of them are about equal in number. But in the background, it seems that problems of optics rather than noise reduction appear. Although the sensor here obviously contributes.

Overall, the camera is well suited for many use cases. Despite all her shortcomings, she will cope with documentary shooting quite well, but artistic shooting is not her strong point.

Telephone part and communications

ZTE nubia Z7 mini works as standard in modern networks 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA, there is also support for fourth-generation LTE (4G) networks, including those frequencies that are used in our country. In practice, with a SIM card of the domestic operator MTS, the device is confidently registered and works in the 4G network. Moreover, a SIM card in any of the slots successfully copes with this, but, as usual, only one of them can operate simultaneously in 4G / 3G mode, and the second at this time is limited only to work in 2G.

We did not find support for NFC technology in our test instance, although some sellers include this parameter in the list of model characteristics on their websites. To USB port here you can connect external devices(be it mice, keyboards or flash drives). The navigation module supports both GPS and domestic Glonass, as well as the Chinese Beidou network (Beidou satellites are marked with red flags).

Spontaneous reboots / shutdowns were not observed during testing. The screen of the smartphone is large, so the drawing of letters and numbers on the virtual keyboard is quite comfortable to control. There is no dedicated top row with numbers on the standard keyboard - you will have to switch the layout every time. The layout itself and the layout of the keys are standard: to switch the language layout, just press the button with the image of a globe. The phone app supports Smart Dial.

The smartphone supports two SIM cards, and in general, work with them in the menu is organized according to a familiar principle: you can assign any of the SIM cards as the main one for organizing voice calls, data transfer or sending SMS messages; when dialing a number, you can also select the desired card directly in the telephone interface. A SIM card in any slot can work with 3G / 4G networks, however, only one of the cards can operate in this mode at the same time. To change the assignments of card slots, you do not need to swap places - this can be done directly from the phone menu.

OS and software

The Google software platform is used as a system android version 4.4.2 and proprietary graphical user interface Nubia UI 2.0. The shell is almost exactly the same as the other models in the nubia series that we tested earlier. The most noticeable feature of the shell is the absence of a separate application menu. Icons of installed programs are automatically laid out directly on desktops, and mixed with widgets. Naturally, not only is the creation of folders / groups supported, but also some of the pre-installed applications have already been sorted into thematic folders by the developers themselves. Supported wide work with gestures, there are a lot of them in the menu, they are combined into several sections, and there are visual instructions for each.

The notification panel is quite informative and has a navigation bar for accessing the most important functions, but it is located not at the top, like the others, but at the bottom. Its content can be customized and sorted according to the user's own taste.

In the general settings menu, there is a set of work profiles that are convenient for quick switching: “In your pocket”, “Sleep mode”, “Desktop” and even a power saving mode, in which not only various power-consuming functions are turned off, but also the GPU can be configured to work in load scenario.

Another mode similar in meaning can be launched from the notification menu by pressing the SplitScreen button. It allows you to have two working windows independent of each other on the same desktop at the same time, the size of which can be changed independently using the movable slider. It is curious that when reducing or increasing the size of each of the windows, the image in it also changes in size, that is, all elements are reduced, but none of them “creeps” off the screen, which is convenient.

There are a sufficient number of pre-installed programs, but most of them are useless for us due to the lack of support for languages other than Chinese - you need to manually install more familiar and familiar applications. And since our test apparatus was designed to Chinese market, and there, as you know, branded applications Google apps are not too favored, then the pre-installed application store Google Play was not on the smartphone. We had to resort to the help of non-standard methods again. Those who are interested can, at their own peril and risk, do such an operation on their own. Just in case, we list the main steps.

To get started, install the required Android tools for Windows. This is easy to do with (just in case, reboot after installation). Now download with rooting tools. Unzip "TowelRoot v3.apk" and "SuperSU Pro v2.0.0.apk" into your smartphone's memory. Install the first apk file through the smartphone explorer, launch the application and click "Make it rain" (an active internet connection is required for successful rooting). Then run the second apk file and grant superuser rights to the application installed with it.

Now install the “ZTE_Handset_USB_Driver.exe” drivers on the PC, and copy them with Google applications to the smartphone’s memory. Activate the developer mode on your smartphone by repeatedly clicking on the "Build number" in the settings, and enable USB debugging through it. Connect your smartphone to your computer. Extract the contents of the "Nubia+_mini_twrp_ver_2.rar" archive attached to the first downloaded archive and run "run_permanente.bat". The program will ask for root rights on the smartphone, grant them. If successful, the line "finished ..." will appear in the program window. Turn it off. Then hold down the volume up button and then the power button. Release the buttons. The phone will boot into custom recovery with an orange header. Select "Install" and then the archive with Google apps. After installation, click "Wipe cache / dalvik" and then "Reboot" to reboot the smartphone.

There may be minor issues with the Play Store. When trying to download any application, we immediately received the error "RPC: S-3". To fix it, you need to remove Google account through the settings and re-add it. There may be a couple of Google services errors, but after that everything will work without problems.

Performance

The ZTE nubia Z7 mini hardware platform is based on the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 single-chip quad-core system (SoC) with four Krait 400 cores. Recall that the new platform has the functionality of Snapdragon 800 with a slightly higher frequency of processor cores: Snapdragon 801 can operate at frequencies up to 2, 5 GHz, while the core frequency of the previous version of the chip was limited to 2.3 GHz. True, for most new flagships, including the hero of today's review, the maximum frequency of processor cores is most often still limited to lower values (in this case, 2.0 GHz). The presented model uses the MSM8974AA platform, which, judging by the specification plate, also has a reduced operating frequency of the Adreno 330 GPU (Max GPU Frequency is 450 MHz).

The amount of RAM of the smartphone is 2 GB, and about 9.5 GB of the nominally designated 16 GB of internal memory for the user's needs in the device is available. The built-in memory can be further expanded with microSD cards: the smartphone supports microSD cards up to 64 GB. Also possible in USB mode OTG connect external flash drives, keyboards and mice to the USB port using a special adapter.

To get an idea of the platform performance of the tested smartphone, let's run a standard set of tests.

For convenience, we have summarized all the results obtained by us when testing a smartphone in the latest versions of popular benchmarks in tables. Several other devices from different segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the obtained dry numbers). Unfortunately, within the framework of one comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions of benchmarks, so many worthy and relevant models remain “behind the scenes” due to the fact that they once passed the “obstacle course” on previous versions of test programs.

Testing in MobileXPRT, as well as in the latest versions of AnTuTu and GeekBench 3:

According to the results of testing in benchmarks, the device proved to be one of the most powerful and productive modern mobile devices on the market. In the AnTuTu test, the test subject showed even higher results than such universally recognized world leaders, samsung galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z2 and HTC One. However, it is not yet clear how the results of the two versions of the popular benchmark correlate with each other, because now the fourth version has been replaced by the fifth, and all new devices are now tested in it. It is not known whether the developers have brought everything to a common denominator, so for now it will be necessary to mark in the plates in which version of the benchmark this or that model was tested. However, the difference between competitors based on Snapdragon 801 is probably not so great, all top smartphones based on this SoC are, in any case, the most powerful mobile devices on the market today, the performance of which will be enough to perform any tasks for a long time to come. .

When testing in 3DMark for the highest performing smartphones, it is now possible to run the application in Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (due to which the speed can rise above 60 fps).

The results of testing the graphics subsystem in the Epic Citadel gaming test, as well as Basemark X and Bonsai Benchmark:

Browser cross-platform tests:

As for benchmarks for evaluating the speed of the javascript engine, you should always make allowances for the fact that the results in them depend significantly on the browser in which they are launched, so that the comparison can only be truly correct on the same OS and browsers, and this possibility is available when testing not always. In the case of Android OS, we always try to use Google Chrome.

Video playback

To test the "omnivorous" when playing video (including support for various codecs, containers and special features, such as subtitles), we used the most common formats, which make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that for mobile devices it is important to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is most often impossible to process modern versions using processor cores alone. Also, do not expect everything from a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it.

According to the test results, the test subject was not equipped with all the necessary decoders that are needed for the full playback of most of the most common files on the network. To successfully play them, you will have to resort to the help of a third-party player - for example, MX Player. True, it will also have to first change the settings, switching from hardware decoding to software or to new mode entitled Hardware+(not supported by all smartphones).

¹ Audio in MX Video Player only played after switching to software decoding or Hardware+; The regular player does not have such a setting.

We did not find the MHL interface, as well as Mobility DisplayPort in this smartphone, so we had to limit ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. To do this, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see “Methodology for testing video signal playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices) 720/24p Great No

Note: If both columns Uniformity and Passes green ratings are set, this means that, most likely, when watching movies, artifacts caused by uneven interleaving and dropping frames will either not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect viewing comfort. Red marks indicate possible problems associated with the playback of the respective files.

According to the criterion for displaying frames, the quality of playing video files on the screen of the smartphone itself is very good, since frames (or groups of frames) can (but are not required to) be displayed with even intervals and without frame drops. The smartphone can even display 4K resolution files up to and including 30 fps, however, in this case, ideal frame interleaving is no longer achieved. When playing video files with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels (1080p), the image of the video file itself is displayed one-on-one, exactly on the edge of the screen and in true Full HD resolution. The range of brightness displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - in the shadows and in the highlights, all gradations of shades are displayed, which is required for the correct reproduction of typical video files.

Battery Life

The capacity of the lithium-ion battery built into the device is not so large by modern standards - 2300 mAh. According to the results of testing, the hero of the review did not show miracles of autonomous longevity, showing modest, but not disastrous results.

Continuous reading in the FBReader program (with a standard, light theme) at the minimum comfortable brightness level (brightness was set to 100 cd / m²) lasted 13.5 hours until the battery was completely discharged, and with continuous viewing of YouTube videos in high quality (HQ) with the same brightness level through home wifi network the device lasted about 7.5 hours. In 3D gaming mode, the smartphone worked for almost 5 hours.

Outcome

As for the cost of the novelty, it is still unknown at what price the ZTE nubia Z7 mini will be officially sold on the Russian market and whether it will even pass the appropriate certification. Perhaps, as happened before, users will have to look for this device from unofficial suppliers among the various offers in online stores. But it’s worth looking for it: ZTE’s smartphone turned out to be extremely high-quality and balanced – by and large, we have before us a real flagship with an excellent high-quality five-inch Full HD display and the most powerful Qualcomm hardware platform to date, albeit not in the maximum configuration . Quality materials, unquestioned build, good ergonomics, a good camera and the already mentioned screen and platform - all this is in any case worthy of praise, but it is especially pleasant that this solution is offered at a great price of $240. The only pity is that such an option is offered in the Chinese market, and having reached our shelves, the device will inevitably rise in price.

Introduction

My previous smartphone was ZTE V987, a very successful model from a fairly popular and good brand. But nothing stands still, the soul asks for updates, and now, after a long study of the forums, assortment and prices, the choice fell on a representative of the same company -. This gadget is already a class higher and belongs to the top, at the moment, Chinese models. Here are its characteristics:

Operating system: Android 4.4

So, what immediately catches your eye from the characteristics against the background of competitors? Of course, 2 SIM cards, the presence of a slot for an SD card, LTE that supports Russian frequencies, and the price. I will try to describe in my review all the strengths and weaknesses of the smartphone that I was able to identify for such a short stay with me.

Contents of delivery

The box, made of strong cardboard, looks very stylish and impressive, you immediately feel that inside is not some kind of Chinese craft, but something more interesting. The color is white on the outside and red on the inside. But the factory equipment is very meager (this trend has now spread everywhere): the smartphone itself, with a protective film already pasted, a microUSB cord, charging. The seller also put an adapter for Russian sockets.

Design

I will say right away that Nubia in reality looks even better than in the photo. It is difficult to find special frills in design, but every little thing adds up to something similar to the “wow effect”.
The Home button is made in the form of a red circle that lights up while using the gadget, flashes when charging, missed calls and SMS. Thanks to a tip from one of the users, I learned that you can also set up notifications for other programs. To do this, you need to add in the screen settings menu desired application in notifications on the lock screen. To the right and left of the central button are red dots that light up only together with the screen. They perform the functions "Back" and "Menu", and the location can be changed in the settings (by default, on the right is "Back").
The rear camera has a steel frame in red, which also looks very interesting.

Materials and Assembly

The smartphone is made of plastic. The back cover is matte and it is removable, unlike the battery. Due to the fact that the battery is screwed to the case, the rigidity was sufficient, but even here there were some mistakes. In my sample, in the places where the battery was attached, the plastic “blurred” a little and therefore the end turned out to be uneven, which in turn led to a slight backlash and creaking of the cover. The problem is not significant, but leaves a small residue. I note that she decided pretty quickly with the help of adhesive tape and scissors :)

Dimensions

Nubia, in the presence of a 5 "screen, has excellent dimensions: 69.3 x 140.9 x 8.19 mm. The frames on the sides are thin, there is nothing superfluous at the top and bottom. The smartphone fits perfectly in the hand (of course, a matter of habit), while it is also light - 145 The battery played a significant role in the small mass, but it will come later.Such dimensions, weight and case materials made it very slippery, and for some who are not used to carefully handling equipment, I would recommend purchasing a rubber or silicone bumper.

Controls and connectors

On the right side are the power and volume keys. Moreover, the power key is located in the area of the thumb (we are talking about right-handers), due to this it is convenient to unlock the device with one hand. Looking ahead, I’ll say that you can turn on the screen on native firmware with a double tap. The key travel is moderately hard, without backlash, with quiet clicks, in general, I would call their performance ideal. The left end is free from any controls.
Under the screen, as already mentioned above, there are touch buttons "Home", "Back", "Menu". There are no complaints about their work, pressing is fixed accurately and without false positives. True, there is one moment, which, quite possibly, is connected with the firmware - the right or left button. It is not possible to trace some pattern, but it does not affect performance.
Above the screen are a mesh earpiece, proximity and light sensors, a 5-megapixel front camera.
At the top is a 3.5mm headphone and headset jack. Bottom - microUSB and microphone hole.
On the back, there is a 13-megapixel camera with LED flash, a hole for a second microphone, which is used for noise reduction and sound recording when shooting video, and a speaker slot. It should be noted that there are small protrusions to the right and left of the slot, which do not allow the sound to be greatly muffled when the smartphone is lying on a hard horizontal surface.

Screen

The Nubia Z7 mini uses a screen made using New Mode 2 technology, which has another name - IGZO. This technology It is also used in the new flagship from Meizu. The matrix manufactured by Sharp is considered one of the best in the world at the moment, and it also has high energy efficiency.
Viewing angles are maximum. The brightness is enough with a margin, the screen remains readable even in sunny weather with a pasted protective film.
There are some minor questions about auto-brightness, but at the moment I'm used to it and it suits me almost always. In the settings menu there is an item "Intelligent sensor", which in some way should improve its operation. This moment is still a mystery to me. There are also options for adjusting the saturation and hue of the screen. and settings for the illumination of the central ring. For comparison, I took a couple of screenshots along with the ZTE V987, which has a slight "yellowness". Nubia from below, standard settings. In general, I really liked the screen, at first I constantly wanted to unlock the smart to admire it :)

Camera

The main camera of Nubia Z7 mini is 13-megapixel, Sony Exmor IMX 214 sensor, five lenses, f/2.0 aperture. The maximum image resolution is 4208x3120 pixels. Next to it is an LED flash, which can also be used as a flashlight.
As for the quality of the pictures, the opinions of the owners differ. What can I say, they are radically different even when viewing the same photos. How many people, so many opinions, I personally concluded for myself that the camera is excellent. Perhaps there are some software flaws, but with straight arms and the right frame, even in automatic mode, you can get great pictures. Some pictures lack brightness and contrast, but even SLR cameras are not immune to this.
Also, some people complain that the photos turn out dark, but firstly, in the “Pro” camera mode, you can manually set the exposure point separately from the focus, and secondly, you can increase this very exposure in the settings. So, it’s better to see once than read a hundred times, so examples of photos are below, and even more can be found. All pictures were taken with default settings and have not been processed in any way. I note that a couple of clicks in any graphics editor The quality of the resulting photos can be significantly increased by “playing” with brightness and contrast. In addition, the result can be improved by setting more fine tuning in the chamber itself.
You can open the original by clicking on the image.

Front-camera. Resolution 5 megapixels, no autofocus. But the focus is set up somehow not very well - when shooting yourself, the image is clear a little further than the arm's length distance. In the photo with an apple, this is noticeable, the objects in focus are just behind it.

Video. The maximum recording quality is 4K (3840 by 2160 pixels), standard is FullHD (1920x1080). It also has tracking autofocus. The quality of the video suits me quite well, for example, I post a couple of videos (you should not watch directly on the site, because the video resolution in the preview is significantly reduced):

Sound

Perhaps, for me, this is the most difficult section, because. and I don’t have sensitive hearing, and I can’t compare it with something obviously of high quality.
So, I have DUNU Trident DN-12 headphones, which have a very high price / quality ratio among professionals, and two smartphones: ZTE Nubia Z7 mini and ZTE V987. I will say this, I personally liked the sound, and without any software processing it is better than on the V987. When you turn on the Dolby Digital Plus built into the firmware, a pleasant and rather deep bass appears, the sound begins to delight even more. But I didn’t like the built-in DTS - the sound gets lost in some kind of mess.
But I achieved the best sound using the ViPER4Android program configured according to the instructions. The sound with it becomes rich, detailed, deep. In fairness, I’ll note that I really like the sound with the viper on the V987. I could hear only a slight difference from Nubia at mid frequencies, for the better for the latter.

Music player on playbackThe external speaker is very loud, the sound is good, does not wheeze, but there is practically no bass.

Offline work

The smartphone has a 2300 mAh battery. Most will say that this volume is not enough, but to achieve such a compact size and mass, something had to be sacrificed. A small help can be an underestimated processor frequency and an energy-efficient screen.
With an average load, I charge the nubia once every two days. Auto-brightness is always on and Mobile Internet 2G, sometimes 3G. Over the weekend, she lasted a little more than a day, this time includes a couple of short calls, about 5 hours of communication in the social. networks (the screen was not always on) and 2 hours of watching online video (both with Wi-Fi turned on). 20 minutes of a series on the Internet drains a smartphone by 5-6%.
According to measurements from one popular resource, the Z7 mini should live 13 h. 20 m in reading mode, 7 h. 20 m in video mode and 4 h. 50 m in 3D gaming mode. there were reasons not to trust these figures, everything is about the same.

platform, memory

The smartphone is built on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 platform, one of the top ones at the moment. It includes a 4-core processor, in Nubia running at a reduced frequency of 2 GHz, instead of 2.5, and a graphics subsystem (GPU) - Adreno 330 with a processor frequency of 578 MHz. The device has 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. The lack of main memory is more than offset by the presence of a slot for microSD-cards. Volumes up to 64 GB are supported.

Performance, tests

Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to test the smartphone in games, but according to other owners, there are no problems with this, most of the modern ones are at maximum settings. In all other respects, the device simply flies, applications open quickly, there are no lags. True, the native launcher fails - when scrolling through the desktops, slowdowns are observed. I hope that in later versions of the firmware this will be fixed. Below are some screenshots from AnTuTu.

Interfaces

The smartphone can work in a huge range various networks:
GSM 850/900/1800/1900
CDMA 1X/ EVDO 800
TD-SCDMA B34/B39
WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100
TD-LTE B38/B39/B40
FDD-LTE B1/B3/B7
The presence of such a range of supported networks and two SIM cards gives the Z7 mini a huge plus against the competition. LTE in Russian networks should work without problems. I managed to get an MTS SIM card for tests and try out 4G. The connection happened right away, the network level is good, but the speed did not please, it practically does not differ from 3G. I made measurements in different parts of the city (Pskov). I would like to believe that the problem is not in the device, but in the quality of the operator's network.

connector microUSB supports the OTG standard, which makes it possible to connect USB drives and various peripherals (keyboard, mouse) to it. There is no MHL support, as far as I know.
Embedded module Bluetooth smartphone version 4.0 with A2DP support.
WiFi the module is dual-band, supports operation in 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.
Neither NFC nor infrared port not in the younger model.

Navigation

Nubia Z7 mini supports, in addition to GPS and Glonass, the Chinese Beidou navigation system. Satellites are located very quickly and in huge numbers. With a cold start indoors, three meters from the window, 17 satellites were caught in about a minute. On the street, it takes a few seconds. Perhaps, such high-quality GPS work is already a plus when compared with competitors in the same price range, but working on MTK.

Software

Smartphone works under Android control 4.4.2 with proprietary shell Nubia UI 2.5. In order not to greatly increase the review, I will not describe all the features of this shell, but instead I will share a link where this has already been done for me and in full (thanks to the user rualvik from w3bsit3-dns.com forum)
I will attach only a few screenshots of the main or distinctive functions.

Desktop(clock widget - Chronus) Dialer and messages Settings Touch sensor settings Gesture sensor settings Screen splitProfiles Lower key settings Application "Energy saving". In it, you can view statistics on the energy consumption of various applications, manage autorun, add programs to the white list that do not need to be unloaded from RAM during cleaning. Application "Security". The names of the menu items speak for themselves.

Replaceable covers

Another distinctive feature of the smartphone is the presence of interchangeable covers of various colors. You can add black to those shown in the photo, they have already appeared on sale.

Conclusion

There were no questions about the quality of communication for a week and a half. Both I and me were always called. The sound in the conversational dynamics is very clear, the volume is enough with a margin. But the vibration is not too strong, which is not surprising, given the size of the device.
The price of the Z7 mini is currently around $280, which in terms of Russian rubles with the current exchange rate will be just over 11,000. But do not forget that there are group purchases, various discounts, coupons and sales. I was able to buy my copy for $ 254, which at the rate of a month ago amounted to 9400 rubles. For that kind of money, given the support for LTE in Russian networks, the presence of slots for two SIM cards and a slot for a memory card, Nubia simply has no competitors. The nearest models are almost 2 times more expensive. If any of these parameters is not of interest, then a slightly wider scope for reflection opens up, although even in this case, the “minka” will be able to argue.

Pros:
Price
Powerful stuffing
Great screen
Russian LTE support
Dual SIM support
Support a large number communication standards
The presence of a slot for microSD
Excellent GPS
Not a bad camera
Excellent sound in conversational dynamics
Small size for its diagonal
Overall, good design and build.
Replaceable covers

Minuses. As such, I can’t single out, but still I’ll list minor shortcomings:
Battery. But as I wrote above - you can live.
The lid may not fit snugly on some specimens. Solved with straight hands.
A slight "dampness" of the firmware and the absence of an official Russian language in it. There is a high probability that in the near future these shortcomings will be corrected by the manufacturer.

UPD. I managed to get a sim card with 4G support. Added a review.

Detailed testing of the new tablet phone from the advanced series

ZTE has once again updated its line of nubia smartphones, which is positioned as a series of premium products. The main one in this series has now become flagship model called ZTE nubia Z7, which replaced its predecessors ZTE nubia Z5 and Z5s. Traditionally, the manufacturer supports several of these “premium models” in the assortment at the same time, united by the nubia line. Previously, there were two modifications: the flagship itself and its mini-version, and we have already published a review of a new mini-model called ZTE nubia Z7 mini). However, this time the Chinese also released the so-called "maxi" modification - a smartphone, which, in theory, should have been similar to the flagship in most characteristics, but bypass it in size and screen area.

To our surprise, the ZTE nubia Z7 Max is actually no bigger than the updated flagship, and in some ways even smaller. With similar physical screen sizes (with the same diagonal of 5.5 inches), the Max version had a lower screen resolution in pixels (1920 × 1080 versus 2560 × 1440 for the ZTE nubia Z7). Also, in the “main” model, the amount of RAM has been increased to 3 GB, but otherwise both smartphones are almost the same.

Contents of delivery

The novelty received as a package exactly the same in appearance and structure of the box in which its brothers in the line were delivered. This is a small box, almost the size of a smartphone itself, made of hard white cardboard with a red layer in the middle. The packaging looks stylish and expensive due to the fact that there are no pictures on its surfaces and only the minimum necessary information is applied.

Inside, in two small compartments, a poor set of accessories is stored: a small charger (5 V, 1.5 A), a USB connection cable and several thin paper books. As in all cases with the products of the nubia series, the packaging and its contents are presented so pathetically that the most favorable mood is immediately created for further acquaintance with the product.

Appearance and usability

In terms of size, the novelty turned out to be quite overall, you can’t name a compact smartphone with such dimensions, although the line separating “ compact smartphone” from the “shovel” has recently been erased quite strongly. Nevertheless, the ZTE nubia Z7 Max is a very large and rather heavy mobile device that fits in the palm of your hand, but it is absolutely impossible to work with it with the same hand.

At the same time, the smartphone is quite thin, the back cover is beveled to the sides, and the surface has a rough non-slip coating, which generally favors the convenience of holding the device in your hand. The smartphone does not slip out of the fingers, and there are practically no fingerprints left on it.

The body of the smartphone is entirely made of plastic, the surface of the plastic is rough, matte, but solid - there is no rubberized soft-touch effect here. The back cover completely covers not only the back, but also the sides, putting on the smartphone's body in the manner of a casing. All hardware buttons, respectively, are fixed on this very cover, so without it the device cannot be fully used.

As with other nubia products, the overall design of the ZTE nubia Z7 Max turned out to be very calm, the smartphone does not look expensive or stylish, it is a completely ordinary-looking, rustic mobile device made of matte plastic. The design of the new nubia certainly does not claim to be premium, there is absolutely nothing to show off to the owner of this device. And at the same time, upon closer examination, the smartphone exudes some kind of nobility, by the quality of small elements, it becomes clear that this product is not from cheap Chinese handicrafts, it has a more impressive pedigree.

Case ZTE nubia Z7 mini has a monoblock structure with a removable back cover, which is held by several plastic latches. The cover can be easily removed; for this purpose, a corresponding ledge is provided on one of the ends. As already mentioned, all side keys are removed along with the cover.

Under the cover are two slots for Micro-SIM cards, as well as microSD slot, which supports the installation of memory cards up to 64 GB. To remove SIM-cards from the slots in the upper part, corresponding holes were made, with which you can push the stuck card. The battery here is tightly closed from the user's eyes with an additional casing, there is no direct access to it. Hot-swapping of SIM cards is not supported - when changing, you must restart the device. The slots are equivalent in terms of their capabilities, but since there is only one radio module, only one of the SIM cards will work in 4G / 3G at the same time, and the other at this moment only functions in 2G.

On the back surface there are several familiar elements: a small window of the main camera, framed by a metallized painted ring, next to it is the eye of a single-section LED flash that can work as a flashlight using a preinstalled program.

A slot is cut in the lower part, which serves to let the sound out of the speaker. On the outside, near the hole, there are two slightly protruding protrusions that prevent the sound from being muffled by a hard surface. Not to say that it was the prettiest of the elements of nubia devices - such a blackened emptiness of the gap is clearly missing at least some kind of metal grille. This, by the way, is one of the noticeable external differences between the cheaper modifications of the Z7 Max and Z7 mini from the main flagship one: in the ZTE nubia Z7 itself, the speaker grille is made in the form of an array of small round holes, which looks much more expressive and aesthetically pleasing than this nondescript slot.

On the other hand, the speaker has a grille, located in the upper part of the front surface. The front panel is completely covered with a flat protective glass Gorilla Glass 3. The front camera window and sensor eyes are hidden under the glass in the upper part above the screen, next to the painted metal speaker grille.

The role of the light indicator is traditionally performed by a round touch button at the bottom under the screen. The circle slowly pulses bright red to indicate charging modes and incoming events; it's called Breath Light. The indicator functions can be configured in a special section of the menu.

Two illuminated dots on the sides are the usual back and menu touch buttons, devoid of their classic designations. However, this option also has its advantages: since the buttons do not have icons with specific designations, their functions can be reassigned through a special menu (at least just swap the buttons).

Mechanical controls are located on one, right side of the device. Here you can find the lock button and the paired volume key. The location of the mechanical buttons is comfortable, with one finger you can easily reach any of them. The keys themselves are quite large, easy to find blindly. The key travel is short, but elastic enough, there are no problems with this.

The universal Micro-USB connector is located at the bottom end, it supports the external device connection mode (OTG), so you can connect a flash drive to your smartphone and read information directly from it.

Headphone audio jack (3.5 mm) is located on the top. Next to it you can see the eye of the infrared transmitter, which serves to emulate the remote control. To work with it, a corresponding program is preinstalled in the smartphone, which contains numerous settings for working with various equipment, from TVs to set-top boxes. There are no plugs or covers for the slots and connectors of the device, since the smartphone is not protected from water and dust. The ZTE nubia Z7 Max does not have a strap attachment.

As for the color options, there are traditionally only two of them for the ZTE nubia Z7 Max model: black and white. Recall, however, that the updated mini version of the flagship, ZTE nubia Z7 mini, is offered in a much wider range of different colors.

Screen

The ZTE nubia Z7 Max is equipped with an IPS (CGS) LCD touchscreen. The screen dimensions are 68 × 121 mm, the diagonal is 5.5 inches, the resolution is 1920 × 1080 pixels. Such a parameter as dot density is 400 ppi here - the density is not a record, but very high. Outside, the screen is covered with protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass. The thickness of the side frames from the edge of the screen to the edge of the case is approximately 3 mm - the frames are quite narrow, but, for example, the recently introduced six-inch tablet Huawei Ascend Mate 7, which also managed to visit our laboratory, the side frames are even narrower.

The brightness of the display can be adjusted manually, or you can use automatic adjustment. When you bring the smartphone to your ear, the screen is locked using the proximity sensor. Multi-touch technology allows you to process several touches at the same time, but, traditionally for ZTE nubia mobile devices, more than three touches will be recognized only when gesture support is turned off, otherwise the device processes only three simultaneous touches.

For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the off screens (on the left is Nexus 7, on the right is ZTE nubia Z7 Max, then they can be distinguished by size):

The screen of the ZTE nubia Z7 Max is as dark as that of the Nexus 7. The ghosting of reflected objects in the screen of the ZTE nubia Z7 Max is very weak, this indicates that there is no air between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix). gap (screen type OGS - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of borders (glass-air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of strong external illumination, but their repair in case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. There is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating on the outer surface of the screen (very effective, maybe a little better than Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much easier and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and with a white field displayed in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 395 cd / m², the minimum was 19 cd / m². In complete darkness, the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 19 cd/m² (normal), in an artificially lit office environment (approx. without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) increases to 370 cd / m² (not to the maximum, but this brightness is enough). As a result, the auto-brightness function works absolutely adequately. At any brightness level, there is virtually no backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker.

This smartphone uses an IPS type matrix. Micrographs show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even at large deviations of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen and without inverting shades. For comparison, here are photographs in which the same images are displayed on the ZTE nubia Z7 Max and Nexus 7 screens, while the screen brightness is initially set to about 200 cd / m² (on a white field in full screen), and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K.

The brightness at an angle at the screens decreased (at least 5 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), and decreased by about the same amount. The black field, when deviated diagonally, highlights medium or strong and acquires a hue from red-violet to yellowish or remains approximately neutral gray. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is approximately the same!):

On the other diagonal

And from another angle:

When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field is not ideal, the black field has a pronounced tint and is not very dark:

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is low - about 625:1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 18ms (9ms on + 9ms off). The transition between grayscale 25% and 75% (according to the numerical value of the color) and back in total takes 30 ms. The gamma curve constructed from 32 points with an equal interval according to the numerical value of the shade of gray did not reveal a blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.19, which is almost equal to the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power dependence:

The color gamut is sRGB:

In this smartphone, in the screen settings, it is possible to slightly reduce or increase the color saturation (color contrast, coverage does not change). Choose a profile Glow, we get:

And the result when choosing a profile Soft:

If you look closely at the average saturation of the colors, you can determine that the result of the correction corresponds to the names of the profiles. In the first picture a little brighter, more saturated, in the second - a little softer, paler. A test with color gradients shows that even when choosing an option standard there is a decrease in gradation in the region of saturated colors, but in Soft with gradations everything is in order:

Let's summarize. The screen has a fairly high maximum brightness and has good anti-glare properties, so the device, most likely, can be used outdoors without any problems even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. It is permissible to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, the absence of flicker and air gap in the layers of the screen, as well as the sRGB color gamut and an acceptable color balance. The disadvantages are the low stability of black to the deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen. Nevertheless, taking into account the importance of the characteristics for this particular class of devices, the screen quality can be considered high.

Sound

In terms of sound, the new ZTE nubia smartphone is, as always, good. The voice recorder can record a conversation from the line using regular means, in the settings you can even set the recording of all telephone conversations in automatic mode.

Camera

Smartphone ZTE nubia Z7 Max is equipped with two modules of digital cameras with a resolution of 13 and 5 megapixels. The main, rear camera has a 13 megapixel matrix with a Sony Exmor IMX214 CMOS sensor with OIS optical stabilization, autofocus and a single-section LED flash. The camera shoots in 4208×3120 resolution.

The camera can shoot video in 1080p and UHD (4K) resolution, 1080p mode at 60 frames / s, unfortunately, is not provided. Sample test videos are shown below.

  • Movie #1 (260 MB, 3840×2160 (4K))
  • Movie #2 (45 MB, 1920×1080)

Sample photos with our comments are presented below.

The foliage is worked out well, but the sharpness drops noticeably in the corners.

The camera copes with noise by half. Not everything has been processed.

Good long-range sharpness.

The camera works out shadows well, but to the detriment of light areas, the dynamic range is narrow.

Even on long-distance cars, the numbers can be distinguished.

This shot perfectly demonstrates the identity of the camera modules in the "small" and "large" versions of the Z7.

An example of a common focus error: the whole image is soapy.

Good sharpness throughout the field of the frame and according to the plans.

The camera does a good job with text.

Yes, and she succeeds in macro quite well.

The camera turned out good. Even field shots are enough to understand that the camera module is the same as in ZTE nubia Z7 mini, and therefore, they cope with shooting in about the same way. The problem areas are still the same: inappropriate sharpening, hacky noise reduction, which processes only half of the noise (although it hides this half of the noise well). It should be noted that the sharpness of the Z7 Max camera is good - not always and not everywhere, but basically it works out the details really well. Also worth noting is the problem with autofocus, which does not always work stably, so you will have to watch the camera when shooting.

In general, the camera, like the "small" nubia Z7, was a success. With documentary shooting, she will cope well, with art - a little worse.

Telephone part and communications

ZTE nubia Z7 Max works as standard in modern 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA networks, there is also support for fourth-generation LTE (4G) networks, including those frequencies that operate on the territory of our country. In practice, with a SIM card of the domestic operator MTS, the device is confidently registered and works in the 4G network. Moreover, a SIM card in any of the slots successfully copes with this, but, as usual, only one of them can function simultaneously in 4G / 3G mode, and the second one is limited to 2G mode at this time.

The smartphone supports NFC technology, you can also connect external devices (whether mice, keyboards or flash drives) to the USB port. The navigation module supports both GPS and the domestic Glonass, as well as the satellites of the Chinese Beidou network (they are marked with red flags).

Spontaneous reboots / shutdowns were not observed during testing. The screen of the smartphone is large, so the drawing of letters and numbers on the virtual keyboard is quite comfortable to control. By the way, for the convenience of working with one hand, a mode for reducing the size of the desktop screen is provided. There is no dedicated top row with numbers on the standard keyboard - you will have to switch the layout every time. The layout itself and the layout of the keys are standard: to switch the language layout, just press the button with the image of a globe. The phone app supports Smart Dial, but the popular swipe input method (Swype) was not found, at least in the European layout.

The slots are equivalent in terms of their capabilities, but since there is only one radio module, only one of the SIM cards will work in 4G / 3G at the same time, and the other at this moment only functions in 2G. To change the assignments of card slots, you do not need to swap places - this can be done directly from the phone menu.

OS and software

The system uses the Google Android software platform version 4.4.2 and the Nubia UI 2.0 proprietary graphical user interface. The most noticeable feature of the shell is the absence of a separate application menu. Icons of installed programs are automatically laid out directly on desktops, the creation of folders is naturally supported.

There is a wide functionality of working with gestures, there are a lot of them in the menu, they are combined into several sections, and there are visual instructions for each. The notification panel is quite informative and has a navigation bar for accessing the most important functions, but it is located not at the top, like the others, but at the bottom of the panel. Its content can be customized and sorted according to the user's own taste.

The organization of working with the screen with one hand is unusually implemented: instead of bringing the elements closer to one of the edges, the entire working screen itself is reduced in size. That is, when this function is enabled, a small copy of the desktop appears in the corner, to any corner of which you can easily reach with the finger of one hand. Several different possible sizes are supported.

There are a sufficient number of pre-installed programs, but most of them are useless for us due to the lack of support for languages other than Chinese - you need to manually install more familiar and familiar applications. And since our test device was intended for the Chinese market, and there, as you know, branded Google apps are not very favored, there was no pre-installed Google Play app store on the smartphone. We had to resort to the help of non-standard methods again. Those who are interested can do the operation themselves at their own peril and risk. Just in case, we list the main steps.

To get started, install the required Android tools for Windows. This is easy to do with (reboot after just in case). Now download the archive with rooting tools.

Next is the installation of CWM-recovery. In order not to reboot again, copy the archive with Google applications to the phone's memory in advance. Now download the archive and extract its contents. Run "!flash_recovery.bat" and connect your phone in debug mode. It is enabled in the developer settings - this item appears in the settings menu if you click on "Build number" many times in the phone information. In the program window that appears, press "1" and "Enter". After a few seconds, a couple of requests for obtaining root rights will appear on the phone, grant them. If successful, the phone will reboot into CWM recovery (it is controlled using the mechanical buttons of the smartphone). Select installation from internal memory, and then the copied archive with applications. Before rebooting into android smartphone can complain about problems with root rights, in this dialog box we selected "fix". Then the smartphone rebooted and Google applications started working without problems.

Performance

The ZTE nubia Z7 Max hardware platform is based on the most powerful single-chip system (SoC) Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 with four Krait 400 cores. This platform has the functionality of Snapdragon 800 with a slightly higher frequency of processor cores: Snapdragon 801 can operate at frequencies up to 2.5 GHz, while the core frequency of the previous version of the chip was limited to 2.3 GHz. The presented model uses the maximum version of the platform - MSM8974AC. Graphics processing in the smartphone is handled by the Adreno 330 video accelerator. The amount of RAM is 2 GB, and about 23 GB of the nominally designated 32 GB is available for the user's needs in the device. The amount of internal memory can be further increased by microSD cards: the smartphone supports such cards up to 64 GB. You can also connect external flash drives, keyboards and mice to the Micro-USB port using a special adapter in OTG mode.

To get an idea of the platform performance of the tested smartphone, let's run a standard set of tests.

For convenience, we have summarized all the results obtained by us when testing a smartphone in the latest versions of popular benchmarks in tables. Several other devices from various segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the obtained dry numbers).

In the AnTuTu test, the test subject showed even better results than the generally recognized world leaders demonstrated before him. However, it is not entirely clear yet how the results of the two versions of the popular benchmark correlate with each other, because now the fourth version has been replaced by the fifth, and all new devices are now tested in it. For now, we will have to mark in the plates in which versions of the benchmark this or that model was tested. However, the difference is probably not so great, all top-end smartphones based on Snapdragon 801 are, in any case, the most powerful mobile devices on the market today, the power of which will be enough to perform any tasks for a long time to come.

According to the test results, the ZTE nubia Z7 Max smartphone pleasantly surprised by the presence of full support for all the necessary decoders in its smartphones. Unlike the majority of reviewed devices from other companies, the capabilities of the built-in video player were enough for trouble-free playback of all our standard test clips. At the same time, there were no problems with sound, and in a third-party MX player you don’t even have to switch to hardware playback in the Hardware+. That is, to put it simply, this device will play any video downloaded from the network without any problems.

Format container, video, sound MX Video Player Regular video player
DVDRip AVI, XviD 720×400 2200 Kbps, MP3+AC3 plays normally plays normally
Web-DL SD AVI, XviD 720×400 1400 Kbps, MP3+AC3 plays normally plays normally
Web-DL HD MKV, H.264 1280x720 3000Kbps, AC3 plays normally plays normally
BDRip 720p MKV, H.264 1280x720 4000Kbps, AC3 plays normally plays normally
BDRip 1080p MKV, H.264 1920x1080 8000Kbps, AC3 plays normally plays normally

We did not find the MHL interface, as well as Mobility DisplayPort in this smartphone, so we had to limit ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. To do this, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see “Methodology for testing video signal playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)”). Screenshots with a shutter speed of 1 s helped determine the nature of the output frames of video files with different parameters: the resolution varied (1280 by 720 (720p), 1920 by 1080 (1080p) and 3840 by 2160 (4K) pixels) and frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps). In tests, we used the MX Player video player in Hardware+ mode. The test results are summarized in the table: Red marks indicate possible problems with the playback of the corresponding files.

According to the criteria for displaying frames, the quality of playing video files on the screen of the smartphone itself is very good, since frames (or groups of frames) can (but are not required) to be displayed with more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. The smartphone can even display 4K resolution files up to and including 30 fps. When playing video files with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels (1080p), the image of the video file itself is displayed one-on-one, exactly on the edge of the screen and in true Full HD resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - all gradations of shades are displayed in the shadows and in the highlights - which is required for the correct playback of typical video files.

Battery Life

The capacity of the lithium-ion battery built into the device is a decent 3100 mAh. However, even with such a large amount of battery, the device did not set any records, showing decent results, but nothing more.

Battery capacity Reading mode Video mode 3D game mode
ZTE nubia Z7 Max 3100 mAh 15h 20m 8h 20m 4h 10m
Huawei Mate 7 4100 mAh 20:00 12:30 pm 4h 25m
ZTE nubia Z7 mini 2300 mAh 13h 20m 7h 20m 4h 50m

Samsung Galaxy S5 2800 mAh 5:20 p.m. 12:30 pm 4h 30m

Continuous reading in the FBReader program (with a standard, light theme) at the minimum comfortable brightness level (brightness was set to 100 cd / m²) lasted 15.5 hours until the battery was completely discharged, and with continuous viewing of YouTube videos in high quality (HQ) with the same level of brightness through a home Wi-Fi network, the device lasted about 8.5 hours. In 3D gaming mode, the smartphone worked for a little over 4 hours.

Outcome

As for the cost of the novelty, it is still unknown at what price this device will be officially sold on the Russian market, but unofficial suppliers already offer it for about 18 thousand rubles. During the presentation in China, the novelty was priced at $320. For this money, the user gets an excellent, high-quality and balanced product, very little different from the flagship of the nubia brand. High-quality materials and assembly, good ergonomics, a good camera, excellent screen and platform - all this is worthy of praise in itself, but especially - given the more than reasonable price. Unfortunately, this statement is true only for the Chinese market - this excellent smartphone will reach us, having already risen in price.
