Hello, dear readers of the inforkomp blog. So, as you understand from the title of the article, today I want to return to the topic again: setting up a wireless access point. To be more precise, I want to talk about: how to flash a router and why do it. I will show the process of resetting the software using an example. Wi-FI router Dlink Dir-300. But, if your router model is different from the one shown here, it’s okay, the process itself is the same, except that only the design of the settings window and the name of the menu items will differ.

Why did I decide to write specifically about the router firmware? First of all, the idea of ​​writing an article about router firmware update, but I couldn’t get it together and do it. The second reason is that recently, many of my friends have begun to ask me exactly this question: how to flash a router, what to press and what firmware to use.

As a rule, many users initially try to update it. For example, when purchasing or setting up a new device, I personally check the firmware version and, if possible, update it to the latest version. And you know what, my router has probably been working for more than a year now and has never frozen.

I believe that it is necessary to update the firmware on the router. The very meaning of updates is that when developers release new firmware versions, they correct all the shortcomings and errors that could appear when working with the Internet and the router. Moreover, the process of flashing the router itself is very easy.

Therefore, if you have serious problems with Wi-Fi, then be sure to read the article and try to reflash your Wi-Fi router.

Why reflash your router?

Well, there can be a lot of reasons to flash a router. Here are a few of them:

• 1. The most common reason is updating the firmware for stable and high-quality operation Wi-Fi signal A;
• 2. No device receives a Wi-Fi signal;
• 3. The message that the smartphone and computer is constantly on;
• 4. The Internet cable inserted into the WAN port is not visible or not detected;

• Do not turn off the access point while flashing;

Well, let's start by determining the revision of the router and downloading the required firmware. In order to find out the hardware version, we need to turn the device over and look at the sticker with technical information. For those who have Dlink dir-300 NRU B7, download the update from this link, selecting the desired version. For owners of routers with revision B1, B2, B3, download. Updating the router firmware D-Link Dir 300

D-Link DIR-300 is a router with a Wi-Fi module and four Ethernet ports. Quite a good thing, but there is one drawback: when sold, it contains old firmware, I don’t remember what year it was made. And until you update it, this router periodically becomes quite glitchy.

The new firmware and Russification file can be found here: ftp.dlink.ru. However, before flashing the most new firmware, you need to download the firmware that updates the router to a level compatible with it, namely, download the firmware /upgrade_first/DIR300A1_FW105B07.bin.

This is done as follows:

1. Go to the MAINTENANCE tab, then select Save and Restore from the menu on the left. In the Save and Restore Settings form, select the Save item and save the router settings to any reasonable location on your hard drive.
2. Download the firmware from the /upgrade_first directory using the link above.
3. Go to the MAINTENANCE tab, then select Firmware Update from the menu on the left. At the bottom of the page is the "FIRMWARE UPGRADE" form. Click the "Browse" button and indicate the file DIR300A1_FW105B07.bin that you just downloaded.
4. Click the "Upload" button and wait for the update process to complete, under no circumstances turning off or rebooting router. Please note that the router Maybe after that, reset the settings to factory defaults and change the IP address to 192.168.0.1.
5. After rebooting the router, we repeat the two previous steps for the firmware file we took from the directory ftp.dlink.ru/pub/Router/DIR-300/Firmware/. There will be 2 files with the extension .bin, we are interested in the one without “langpack” in the name.
6. After performing the second update (after which also available factory reset), the LANGUAGE PACK UPGRADE form appears on the MAINTENANCE/Firmware Update page. Using it (similar to using the FIRMWARE UPGRADE form) Can download the Russification file, the same second file with “langpack” in the name. The process is completely similar to updating the firmware.
7. If during the update the factory settings were reset, on the MAINTENANCE/Save and Restore page in the Save and Restore Settings form, click the “Browse” button in the Load Settings From Local Hard Drive line and indicate the settings file that was saved in the beginning. After that, click the “Upload” button to upload the settings to the router and wait for this process to complete.

Having completed all of the above operations, we will most likely save the router (in my experience) from freezes, sudden resets, inability to see the external network and sometimes the inability to boot with the external network connected. Well, from other bugs, I hope, too :)

Two years have passed since the instructions were written. During this time, D-Link has released several versions of this router. The software for them, in particular firmware, is not in the above directory, but in others:

1. DIR-300 is the same router about which this post was originally written. In addition, judging by the names of the files, this firmware is suitable for DIR-300A1 routers. However, perhaps the first version was simply renamed from DIR-300 to DIR-300A1. Instructions are available DIR-300+A1_Manual+v1.0.pdf.pdf (twice.pdf - if there is a typo, it’s not mine - that’s what the file is called on the server), DIR-300_QIG_RUS_02.pdf, Manual_DIR-300_A1_rev_1_0_RUS.pdf.
2. DIR-300_C1 - there should be a firmware update here, but on at the moment (09/05/2012) she is not there. Only instruction DIR-300_C1_QIG_v6.00(RU).pdf is available.
3. DIR-300_NRU - please note that for now exists TWO INCOMPATIBLE variant of this router, namely the B1-B2-B3 series firmware and the B5-B6 series firmware. You can distinguish them by reading the sticker on the bottom of the router (see file !!!reamde_first!!!.doc). The firmware is located in the corresponding directories: /B1_B2_B3/ and /B5_B6/. If you flash the wrong firmware, you will most likely have to take the router to a service center.

Despite the fact that the firmware of the relatively recently widespread Wi-Fi router D-Link DIR-300 D1 is not much different from previous revisions of the device; users have questions related to a small nuance when they need to download the firmware from the official D-Link website, as well as the updated web interface in firmware versions 2.5.4 and 2.5.11.

This instruction will show in detail how to download the firmware and how to flash the DIR-300 D1 new version Software for two versions initially installed on the router - 1.0.4 (1.0.11) and 2.5.n. I will also try to take into account everything in this guide possible problems that may arise.

If you have already connected the router and know how to log into its web interface, you do not need this section. I’ll just note that it’s better to update the firmware via a wired connection to the router.

For those who do not have a router connected yet, and who have never done such things before:

1. Connect the router with a cable (included) to the computer from which the firmware will be updated. The computer's network card port is LAN port 1 on the router. If you don't have network port on a laptop, then skip the step, we will connect to it via Wi-Fi.
2. Plug the router into a power outlet. If it will be used for firmware wireless connection, after a while the DIR-300 network should appear, not protected by a password (provided that you did not change its name and parameters earlier), connect to it.
3. Launch any browser and enter 192.168.0.1 in the address bar. If suddenly this page does not open, check that in the parameters of the connection you are using, in the properties of the TCP/IP protocol, Obtain IP and DNS automatically is set.
4. When prompted for a login and password, enter admin. (When you first log in, you may also be asked to immediately change the standard password; if you change it, don’t forget it, this is the password for entering the router settings). If the password does not work, then perhaps you or someone else changed it earlier. In this case, you can reset the router by pressing and holding the Reset button on the back of the device.

If everything described was successful, we proceed directly to the firmware.

The process of flashing the DIR-300 D1 router

Depending on what firmware version is currently installed on the router, after logging in you will see one of the configuration interface options shown in the picture.

In the first case, for firmware versions 1.0.4 and 1.0.11, do the following:

1. Click “Advanced settings” at the bottom (if necessary, turn on the Russian interface language at the top, Language item).
2. Under System, click the double right arrow and then Software Update.
3. Specify the firmware file that we downloaded earlier.
4. Click the "Update" button.

After this, wait for the firmware of your D-Link DIR-300 D1 to complete. If you feel like things are frozen or the page has become unresponsive, please go to the Notes section below.

In the second option, for firmware 2.5.4, 2.5.11 and subsequent 2.n.n, after entering the settings:

1. In the menu on the left, select System - Software Update (if necessary, enable the Russian language of the web interface).
2. In the "Local Update" section, click the "Browse" button and specify the firmware file on your computer.
3. Click the "Update" button.

Within a short time, the firmware will be downloaded to the router and updated.

Notes

If, when updating the firmware, it seemed to you that your router was frozen, because the progress bar in the browser moves endlessly or simply shows that the page is unavailable (or something similar), this is simply because when updating the software, the connection between the computer and the router is interrupted, you just need to wait a minute and a half, reconnect to the device (if a wired connection was used, it will restore itself), and go into the settings again, where you can see that the firmware has been updated.

Further setup of the DIR-300 D1 router is no different from setting up the same devices with previous interface options; the differences in design should not scare you.
