An exciting family trip is the best gift during the winter holidays. There are many options for where to go with your child these days: you can escape from the frost or slush to the southern countries, where there is sea, beach, lots of sun and summer-like warmth, or you can, on the contrary, go with the whole family to one of the ski resorts.

According to experts, ski resorts that are best suited for families with children are in many countries: Spain, Norway,. One of them is the ski resort Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis - the most children's winter resort in the mountains of Austria, located in the federal state of Tyrol.

Ski resort Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis

The Tyrolean lands are the most beautiful places in Austria, crossed by mountain peaks (there are over 600 of them), with high-mountain glaciers, picturesque valleys and alpine meadows, with a mild climate - tourists from different countries are very fond of visiting them. It's always sunny and comfortable here.

The tourist complex Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is a union of the regions of three Tyrolean villages: the larger Serfaus and neighboring Fiss and Ladis, located at the sources of the main Tyrolean river Inn. Together they form a vast skiing area with a large length of slopes, which is united by a single ski pass. Located high above sea level (1200-2800 m), this ski resort is guaranteed to provide snow on its slopes.

Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is:

  • 214 km of trails of varying difficulty at altitudes from 1200 m to 2820 m. Mount Masnerkopf is the highest point.
  • 30 kilometers of cross-country skiing and 10 kilometers of toboggan runs in Fiss and Serfaus.
  • 68 lifts of various types.

At the lower lifts of the ski stations there are sports shops and rental points where you can rent ski equipment (you can reserve it in advance online). At the final station there is a storage facility where you can deposit your skis. A special feature of this facility is computer temperature control and automatic drying.

Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is a magnificent ski resort where you can relax with the whole family with children of all ages. In this wonderful place, the surprisingly clean alpine mountain air is especially fresh, because there are no cars in Serfaus. All visitors leave their cars in the parking lot at the entrance to the city and then go by metro (travel is free). The village's own metro station (Dorfbahn) is a local attraction. This unique underground road with silent hovercraft trains connects the center and the ski lifts. Its length is just over a kilometer. It was built more than 30 years ago and recently renovated and modernized. The metro operates from 8 am to 7 pm. It is very convenient to use, especially in winter.

How to get there

The mountain resort, located in the Austrian Alps in the west of the country, can be reached by train, plane, or taxi.

The closest airport to the resort is Innsbruck Airport, an hour's drive away. You can order a transfer from the airports of Vienna, Munich, Zurich. From Vienna or Zurich it is easy to reach by train. There are excellent train connections here. From Landeck station, which is a half-hour drive from the ski resort, you can get there by bus, but it’s more comfortable and faster to take a taxi.

Ski pass

A ski pass is a special permit in the form of a magnetic plastic card with information recorded on it (your personal data, validity period, coverage area), which provides you with unhindered access to the ski lifts of ski resorts.

One ski pass is valid for the entire region. Its price depends:

  • from age: children under 6 years old are allowed on the ski lifts for free, discounted tickets are available for children from 6 to 16 years old and older people (over 65 years old);
  • depending on the season (in the “high season”, which includes the Christmas and New Year holidays, the price can rise by 15%);
  • from the coverage area (a universal ski pass gives you the right to ski in neighboring valleys).

Why families with children love to visit this ski resort

  1. Ideal conditions have been created here for families with children.

When going on a trip with a small child, you can book the necessary baby accessories (stroller, crib, high chair) in advance at the tourist office. For accommodation with children, you can find inexpensive, cozy family hotels of various categories, apartments, boarding houses, chalets with free swimming pools and water and health treatments.

All resort hotels are aimed at families with children, but among them are several of the most popular family hotels:

  • Hotel Bar – Leading Family Hotels & Resorts 4* (Serfaus)
  • Hotel Lowe – Leading Family Hotels & Resorts 4* (Serfaus)
  • Baby und Kinderhotel Laurentius 4* (Fiss)
  • Familienhotel Furgler 4* (Serfaus)

In Serfaus there are hotels with Russian owners: Hotel Maximilian 4*, Tirolerhof 3*. Some hotels offer a free shuttle to the ski lifts.

The resort has many ski and entertainment parks for children: in Serfaus - Kinderschnealm, Murmli Park, Tubing Park, in Fiss-Ladis - Bertas Kinderland, with playgrounds, slides and slopes for children, with children's slopes and special children's lifts (there is even one for transporting children in a stroller), children's cable car, "talking" animals.

  1. Ski schools accept children from 3 years old

They are divided into groups depending on their level of training. For beginners who have started skiing for the first time (it is important to do it correctly), classes begin on small hills (the hills here are of different lengths and complexity). Then the training program becomes more difficult every day along with the height of the slide. By the end of their training, many children can already ski with an instructor on simple “blue” slopes, “populated” by bears, eagle owls, and cartoon characters who dance, sing or growl when little skiers approach them.

Children who are confident on skis master more difficult trails (color markings are used to determine the difficulty of the trail: “blue” for easy trails, “red” for difficult trails, “black” for experts). Skiing is accompanied by fun ski races, competitions, ski carousels, an animation program, and games on snow slides. On the special gentle slope Murmli Trail, interesting adventures and surprises await little skiers.

  1. Lots of entertainment for adults and little resort guests

For thrill-seekers - the Skyswing swing, the Fisser Flieger hang glider in Fiss, the Famielen Coaster Schneisenfeger roller coaster, the Serfauser Sauser rope system.

For adults - night shows, gourmet restaurants, interesting excursions to Innsbruck, to the Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens, shopping in Switzerland in Samnaun, indoor swimming pools.

For young tourists, the resort has special children's restaurants with a children's menu: Starrest, Murmlirest, Bertas Kinderplanet at the ski schools in Serfaus and Fiss, and the family restaurant Sonnenburg.

Where can you leave your child under supervision during the day?

In Serfaus, at the lower stations of the ski school lifts, you can leave children from 1 to 5 years old at Murmli Krippe. In the ski kindergarten there is something to do. Children under 3 years old and those who do not want to ski can have fun in the children's amusement parks, go sledding with their parents or slide down the special 30-meter snow tubing track.

Even the smallest ones are not left unattended. For babies (from 3 months) there is a place at the Bertas Kindergarten in Fiss-Ladis. Experienced nannies will look after the children, and parents will be able to spend this time on the mountain slopes. In addition, many hotels have children's clubs that also offer babysitting services.

In short, this is a real winter paradise for children. And parents won’t be bored either: those who like to ride will easily find a suitable route for themselves.

By the way, you can relax at this resort not only in winter, but also in summer. Have a nice holiday!

When children are happy, their parents are doubly happy. And Serfaus is exactly the resort where happiness is in the air. You can even hear it: it sounds like children's laughter and squealing coming from the playgrounds where ski school classes are taking place.

And when little skiers proudly compete in their first competitions, and then ski on real adult slopes, we can say with confidence: the family vacation was a complete success.

Serfaus on the map of Austria

Serfaus (Zerfaus) is a commune in western Austria, in the federal state of Tyrol, as part of the Landeck district (the administrative center is the city of Landeck). The distance from Serfaus to Landeck is 26 km, to Innsbruck - 97 km, to Salzburg - 280 km, to Munich (Germany) - 185 km, to Vaduz (Liechtenstein) - 126 km.

In 1999, the municipality of Serfaus merged with neighboring villages to form the ski resort of Serfaus - Fiss - Ladis. Also within a radius of 20 km there are three more ski areas: Nauders, Ried, Kaunertal glacier (3160 m). All of them are united by a single ski pass.

Not far from the places where Serfaus is located, on the border of Austria and Switzerland, there is another famous winter resort - Ischgl. In this part of the Alps, the mountains climb up to 3000 meters, so there is snow from late autumn to mid-spring.

Vacation with children

Ski resort Serfaus is bluntly called childish. Not because of the small number of trails - there are many of them, and there are even more difficult ones than simple ones.

The secret is this: the resort's children's ski schools are among the best in Europe, and children in Serfaus don't just start skiing, but fall in love with this activity for life.

A trip to Serfaus with children is usually filled with all sorts of activities. Even if the child does not spend all his energy in classes and in the snow town, you can spend time with him on the toboggan run, at the skating rink, or playing curling.

And after such a busy day, a cozy hotel will be waiting for you, where all the conditions have been created for you to relax comfortably with your child. This applies to cribs, leisure activities, and meals for the youngest guests. Families with an infant will appreciate the set of necessary accessories for caring for the baby.

Summer holidays in Serfaus are not inferior to winter holidays in terms of the number of interesting things to do. And even if the weather at the resort is not warm, this is not a hindrance for active pastime. In the summer, there are amusement parks for children in Serfaus, but instead of attractions there are adventure trails and water play areas.

In addition, in the warm season it is easier to go on excursions: a trip to Innsbruck or a trip to the Principality of Liechtenstein will bring a lot of fun to the whole family.

Please note that Serfaus lies at quite high altitudes, and acclimatization may take several days for a child.

When is the best time to go?

The winter season in Serfaus starts in the second week of December and lasts until mid or late April. Usually at this time the mountains are covered with snow, the weather remains frosty, and everything is favorable for skiing.

But not even good snow cover serves as a signal for the opening of the season in Serfaus. The main event, which attracts a huge number of spectators, is Adventure Night show. It is first shown at the end of December, and the last time is in mid-April (this marks the end of the season).

When is the best time to go to Serfaus? If you don’t want to stand in line at the ski lifts, choose mid-January, the second half of March and early April for your trip. At the beginning of December, the resort is still not at full capacity, for Christmas, New Year and in February-March there are a lot of vacationers here, and in April there may be problems with snow.

You can also plan a vacation with your child in the summer. The weather in the summer months is not hot, often rainy, but sunny days are not uncommon. It is best to travel to Serfaus with a baby in the summer, since winter is often very frosty.

Weather and climate

The climate of Serfaus may not seem very welcoming. From November to March the resort is frosty, and in the summer the air does not even warm up to +20° C. But this weather also has its pleasant moments.

The first advantage is a long and snowy winter. By the end of November, there is a 10-centimeter layer of snow in Serfaus. The air temperature drops to zero during the day and to -5-12° C at night.

In December, the thickness of the snow cover reaches 40 cm, and snowfalls do not stop until April. The temperature drops to -3-10°C during the day and to -4-15°C at night.

In January and February, the weather is similar, but night frosts can intensify: occasionally the resort gets cold down to -22-30° C. Clear days alternate with cloudy ones, only the end of winter is usually very gloomy.

The time for the best holiday in Serfaus with children comes with the arrival of spring. Daytime temperatures range from -5°C to +5°C, although nights remain winter-like frosty.

In April the air warms up to +2-6° C, but with the onset of darkness it becomes sharply cold. In May, snowfalls give way to rains - they will rain all summer.

The temperature gradually increases, from +7-13° C to +10-20° C in July-August. Despite the heavy rains, the weather in Serfaus is most often sunny, but not hot - this is the second advantage of the resort.

When planning a holiday in Serfaus for the summer, be sure to take warm clothes with you, because at night the temperature can drop to zero.

Autumn at the resort is early and quite cold. Already in September, night frosts are possible, and during the day the temperature barely rises to +6-12° C. In October it gets colder to +2-9° C.

Transport

The city's public transport in Serfaus is unusual: instead of ski buses, there is the Dorfbahn, a silent hovercraft metro. The metro is free and trains run from 8:00 to 19:00 and until midnight on Wednesdays during Adventure Night. The exact schedule is on the resort's tourism website.

But driving in Serfaus is prohibited.

If you are going on vacation by car, you will be able to get to the hotel upon arrival, but further within the resort you will need to travel on foot or by metro. In Fissa and Ladis, the travel ban applies only at night.

To travel around Serfaus all year round, you can use intercity bus number 4236, which runs several times a day. An adult ticket for a trip from Serfaus to Fiss and Ladis costs about 3 euros, tickets for children are half the price. The same bus can take you to Landeck, from where trains go to Innsbruck and Salzburg.

Those who prefer active recreation to idle excursions should pay attention to the resort of Serfaus, located in the western part of Tyrol. A developed infrastructure of ski slopes, a system of routes divided by difficulty levels, modern ski lifts, fun parks for snowboarders - all these entertainments can be taken advantage of if you organize a ski holiday in Serfaus for yourself and your family in winter. Even the youngest tourists will have something to do here. Especially for this category of travelers, there are special tracks for children's sleigh races, playgrounds with towers, and a ski camp for the age group of 6 years and older. Families going on holiday to Serfaus with children aged 2 years and older can take advantage of the services of kindergartens staffed by professional teachers and nannies.

Serfaus - hotels and inns

It is worth noting that Serfaus is a fairly expensive resort. Mostly 4 star hotels are located here. The close proximity to the local metro, which has several stations, allows tourists to get to the nearest ski lift in a matter of minutes. For those staying in hotels of this level, beauty salons, swimming pools, baths and saunas, cable TV with Russian-language channels are available.

For tourists who want to get maximum service, 5-star Serfaus hotels are suitable. Having settled in such a place, you can take advantage of a lot of additional services: salt rooms, indoor pools with mountain water. Travelers are offered animation programs for adults and children.

For a relatively low price, it is possible to stay in rooms offered by 3-star hotels. Quantity additional services in such hotels a little less than in four-star hotels, but the prices for a holiday in Serfaus per night in a room are quite acceptable even for budget tourists. And if you buy last-minute tours to Serfaus, then such a trip will be several times cheaper.

Serfaus is a godsend for experienced skiers

A special feature of the resort is its many red runs. Therefore, travelers who confidently maneuver on skis and who have purchased ski tours to Serfaus from Moscow or another city will have a place to ski here. After completing the route, the tourist can leave his skis in Serfaus 2020 at the depot. This is a fully computerized site, equipped with an automatic dryer and heaters for ammunition.

Having ordered a ski pass, a tourist can freely use any ski lift. It is worth considering that you will need to pay for a ski pass separately - prices for tours to Serfaus do not include the cost of this service. Adults will need to pay about 200 euros for 6 days of using a ski pass, and for children, ski tours to Serfaus with this service will cost only 100 euros more than the base price.

Serfaus- a specialized resort, focused mainly on ski holidays with children. The resort began to actively develop several years ago after the merger of the ski areas of the villages of Serfaus, Fiss and Ladis into a single ski region. The resort's pistes are wide and well prepared. The lifts are comfortable and modern. The village is pedestrian, there are no ski buses running either around the resort or between the villages. There is a silent underground metro line on an “air cushion” with 4 stations. Travel on the metro is free.

Skiing in this region is mainly for children, beginners and intermediate skiers. There are not many trails for professionals.

SELECTION OF A TOUR TO SURFAU

Resort statistics:

  • Minimum altitude - 1200 m
  • Maximum altitude - 2700 m
  • Beginning of the season - December
  • End of season - April

Lifts:

  • 32 rope tows
  • 9 chairlifts
  • 8 telecabins
  • 1 funicular

Trails:

  • total of 180 km of ski slopes + 111 km of cross-country ski slopes
  • "Blues" - 36%
  • "Reds" - 59%
  • "Black" - 5%

Characteristics of the tracks:

The slope equipment and piste markings are almost flawless. Here the descents are usually named rather than numbered. The overall connectivity of the ski areas is quite satisfactory, except for the presence of rope tows at the key junctions between Mindersjoch and Scheid, as well as on the northern red slopes of Schoenjoch.

  • For professionals: There are only five black runs at the resort. The most difficult descent is “Lazid Nord” (length - 2.8 km, drop - 400 m): steep relief rifts and heterogeneous coverage of snow mixed with ice. Next in difficulty are the Gfallfbfahrt and Waldfbfahrt trails, each 2.5 km long, with a drop of 420 m. Both trails are spacious, but steep. Masner-Alm-Abfahrt (1.6 km, drop 230 m) is one of the steepest and most relief slopes in the region. However, the local black slopes will not offer anything extremely difficult or more or less remarkable to an expert.
  • For intermediate level: There is not a single ski lift in Serfaus from which some red run does not start. "Red" skiing in Serfaus is more than comfortable. The most interesting slopes are the rather steep Mindersabfart piste from Mindersjoch (2684 m), as well as a bunch of red slopes on the northern slope of Schoenjoch (2509 m), which are wide and straight slides, ending with an extremely beautiful panoramic descent to Fiss or Ladis. One of the most pleasant trails is the Moosabfart, which is easy and short.
  • For beginners: Komperdell (1980 m) is the most crowded place. The brightly decorated children's lift "Pendelbahn" comes here. From here descends the wide flat slope "Gampenabfart" (1.2 km), which then turns into "Mittelabfart" (3.5 km ) and leads to the lower station of the lift. The most interesting terrain of all the blue slopes is, perhaps, "Lawensabfahrt" (2.5 km): the average width and steepness of the slope does not allow beginners to relax, due to the constantly changing relief pattern. The trails are well-groomed and snow-covered to a plus level.
  • Snowboard. For freestyle there is one fan park each in Fiss and Serfaus. For freeride, Rendl is more suitable (from Zwölferkopf to the right towards the Urgatal route). According to the Austrian snowboarders themselves, Serfaus is the best resort in Austria for this sport.
